Hey guys,
Hopefully you can help. I am a new member of this forum but I have enjoyed reading all of the posts for the last few years. I just recently bought an older (2002??) Kubota B21 backhoe/ loader with the D1005 engine in it. It has around 3,000 hours on it. The problem I have is it has lots and lots of black smoke under a load and also when you throttle up hard. Secondly, I notice that when you are at a higher RPM (2,000 +) it takes around 4-5 seconds for it to completely idle down which is a lot longer than other D1005 engines that I have seen. It just seems "lazy" when it comes to idling down. It has no problem throttling up. I am thinking that these two problems might be related but not positive. It seems to get worse when it gets warmer. It starts very easy when cold or hot, runs smooth, and doesn't smoke unless its under a load. Here is some of the steps I have already taken:
-Checked air cleaner
-No blockages in the intake manifold
-Checked for a clogged muffler
-Complete fuel flush
-Replaced fuel filter
-Removed all 3 injectors to have them checked/ cleaned by a professional (They checked out good, but when I pulled them out initially I noticed the middle injector had a purple color to the tip?)
-Removed injector pump to have it checked/ cleaned by a professional (Checked out good) I kept the same 2 shims on it that were there from the start. The lever moves free and easy.
-Adjusted valve lash to .006 on all valves
-Compression when cold is: 380, 400, 400
-Stop solenoid has been removed for testing purposes
-I played with the 2 rack adjustments with only changes for the worse.
-I did NOT check timing marks on flywheel but I didn't change anything with timing and it does seem to run good and put out decent power.
-Coolant seems good (Nice green color to it)
-Engine does not burn oil
-There is no blowby
-Glow plugs bench tested good
I am not sure where to go from here. Maybe I should just run it as is? To anyone else they would get on it and not know anything is wrong but I know that access black smoke is an issue. I am starting to think maybe there is a governor problem that is allowing too much fuel on acceleration and also not allowing the throttle back down to an idle fast enough.
Please post any advice you might have for me.
