I own a 1988 B6200d with the RC60-72 mower run via the front pto clutch assembly. I removed the mower deck tonight to do some repairs to it, and briefly started the tractor to move it out of the way. Suddenly heard a horrible banging noise coming from tractor and immediately turned it off. It appears the front part of the driveshaft (connected to the front clutch and PTO, cirlced in picture), was spinning wildly while the tractor was running. The clutch was disengaged, but there was just enough friction on the belts of the front clutch, to cause the driveshaft to spin......My question is, when I have the mower deck removed (lets say for winter), do I also need to remove the whole front PTO clutch assembly?

I think you might have removed one too many parts.

But if you want it all off, then yes you must remove the clutch and shaft too.

In your picture you show the blue front assy. with the PTO shaft flopped over on the side. Just remove that front part of the PTO shaft. Leave the remainder of the front assy (blue in picture) on the tractor.

I have the same setup on my B7200. My front half of the shaft is shorter, about where the white line on the shaft is in your picture. I leave this part on with the deck off and it does not spin with engine running. The cable has some adjustment, take a look at yours and see if you can get the idler roller to swing over more to let the belts have more slack. Jeff
