How to increase Hydraulic psi?

I have a B6000 with the auxiliary belt driven pump mounted to the front of the engine and I am curious if there is a way to turn up the psi on it some how. I can usually lift just fine but it won't power down very well.

Being that the problem is on the down and not on up, I highly doubt it's a pressure issue, it's either a valve or piping issue.;)

Agreed. All things the same, psi to the cylinders should be the same in and out. So, something else is different.
On a seperate note- Wolfman, you have really jumped in since joining, and you have wisdom and good advice. I look forward to what you have to say.

It will lift a little bit when going down but not sure if it should lift more. Isn't there only the one valve in the circuit aside from the ram? So would I assume it would be in the control valve itself? What should I see for pressures and would I just hook on both sides of the control valve to check the pressures?

Also is there a way for me to tell what output this belt driven pump should have compared to what is really needed to run a fel?

With a FEL it's not always a matter of PSI as it is GPM.
PSI is the power, and GPM is the rate at which it will do things.
With most tractor systems you can expect pressures between 1200PSI to 2500PSI.
Don't know what your pump should put out, you will have to find the specs for the model that you have, on a belt driven model I wouldn't expect much.

Another reason for poor FEL performance is not because of a fault in the high pressure output side of the system but the input side, check the pickup screens and the filters first. A clogged screen or filter will make the world of difference in the operations and performance.

I don't think there is a pickup screen or filter on this tractor. The reservoir is part of the loader and it just have a line running to the pump. Would you be able to tell me how to set the pressure on the control valve?

The screen can be incorporated on the fitting inside the tank.


There is no way that I know of to turn up the pressure on that style of valve.

Thanks for all the help! I will look for the screen tonight when I get home. I guess if I decide to change that valve to add the float feature (hoping to be able to find a used one off something to save a little money) there is a way to set the relief pressure. I am slowly learning more and more about this tractor so I really appreciate the help!
Btw I have been to Sandpoint a few times for the car show in the spring although it has been a few years now.

As North Idaho Wolfman stated, there is probably a screen at the suction line where it attaches to the tank. Here is a pic of a B219 loader tank showing the suction line. The large hex fitting it screws into is the screen, much like the one North Idaho Wolfman has shown. When I got mine, the screen was filthy & the tank had a lot of sediment at the bottom.

The control valve in your pic appears to be the same one my B219 uses- the pressure relief valve is under the cap in the valve body in the lower right corner of your pic, next to the control lever. It consists of a spring-loaded poppet valve. Pressure is changed by changing the spring or shimming it. Unless the spring is broken or the valve is stuck partially open, I wouldn't mess with it until you have a gauge in the system, and verify what the operating pressure should be. Raising the pressure without more info could easily have you blowing out seals or hoses and taking a bath. (or worse) Those hoses don't look exactly pristine.

I will definitely look for a screen down below now. I put all new fluid in and replaced a couple seals but never thought to look for a filter down below. I definitely don't feel like a bath or to blow seals so I will check that and the pressure first. Would I have to hook to each individual port to get a pressure reading for that portion of the valve? Thanks for all the help guys I really appreciate it.
I wish I had a way to look up the operating pressure but I don't have that manual and my tractor is a gray market so I'm not sure if it would be the same as what's on the b6000's.
