How much hydraulic fluid does my backhoe need?

Hi Orange-folk,

This is my first post. I have certainly learned a lot, a whole lot, reading through this site. At least I've learned enough to know I have a LOT to learn!

I'm an old lady, but getting a bit younger with the help of my brand new (to me) Kubota L2850 (1988) Orange Kricket came with a yellow backhoe. I'm trying to figure how much hydraulic fluid it takes. It's empty now (I know, Oh oh...) It has a slew of decals that are clearly newer than it is. One gave the phone for Taylor. I called, and Jeff (very nice!) told me that "yellow" was probably a Kelly, and that Kelly was a sister company to Taylor years back.

I did find a plate that said:
model # KBH.90 vps
serial # 2002.000126

Anything anyone can offer will be greatly appreciated!

Woozie, you have my attention. I don't know any answers to your question on your backhoe, but I'd like to see as you said,"I'm an old lady" digging a hole to plant a bush, or bury a cow, or remove a stump. Maybe even a You Tube video to give some encouragement to others!

Welcome, keep us posted. How about some pictures of your machine?

Not a whole lot of info out there on these models.
They were well made (They are Italian).
Look around the tank for a sight glass, or maybe a plug with a dip stick, also look in the fill hole sometimes they just have a mark where full is, You really can't have to much fluid in the tank, just leave room for expansion. ;)

Wolfman is correct if your hoe has a tank of it's own. Fill it up ,but leave room for foam and expansion. I have a Arps 750 at the farm and it runs off the back tractor remotes. This uses the tractors hyd./trans oil and it will need to be topped off if your hoe cylinders are empty when starting out. Enjoy.

Hey Thanks all for the welcome, and tips. Yes there is a sight glass (thank you for letting me know what it is called) I'm going to buy hydraulic fluid tomorrow, and would love a clue as to whether I need a quart, a gallon, or a truck load (OK, I'm not quite that far gone...) But I really don't know how much.

And I don't know what type. I don't even know if there are "types"

Yes, ground is frozen (not too deep) and I need a burying hole - - not quite a cow-hole, but pretty close...

My opinion is any decent 10weight generic hydraulic oil will work fine since you have a self contained unit. Tractor supply would probably be on of the cheaper places to start. I would say 5 gallons and I base this on a woods 7500. Hope this is what you are asking.

Second the 5 gallon bucket.
Any universal hydraulic oil will work for ya. ;)

You may not be able to lift 5 gallons of fluid, hold it in place and tilt it just right to get it into the tank. Think about how to get it into the tank before your buy. They have the fluid in 1, 2 and 5 gallon sizes.

There are also hand pumps you can buy for the 5 gallon size so you can move the fluid more easily.
