I have a 2018 Kubota L4701 with approx 350 hrs. It gets used to some extent, every couple of days. I put 10 gallons of fresh diesel in it yesterday and started turning over the garden spot. After about an hr, it just died….like it ran out of gas. I cleaned and drained the water separator (it didn’t have any noticeable water in it) and finally got it started again. It ran fine for another 20-30 minutes and then the same thing happened. I ran and got a new fuel filter, put it on, bled all of the air from the filter bleeder and finally got it started again. Once I got it started, the same thing happened yet again, only this time, once I got it running again, I idled it up and at about 1200 RPM’s, it started to run rough and miss. It also blew out some brownish, black smoke, which cleared up fairly quick, but it’s still running rough. No warning lights are on and I service the tractor at the recommended intervals. Hopefully one of y’all can help me out!

On some of the tractors there is a screen at the entry port of the water separator. Look to see if it is plugged up and restricting the fuel from entering the separator. While you have the fuel line off, run some fuel into a glass jar and let it set overnight and look for water in the fuel. Also check the flow an make sure there is nothing blocking the fuel from entering the fuel line.

Loosen the fuel tank cap…in order to eliminate a vacuum being formed due to improper venting of the tank. (Blocked fuel tank vent.)

Thank you GeoHorn.
It is an easy thing to check, and in my view should be first on the check list. I have been mentioning it each time I read about a fuel starvation issue. It happened to me once (deep in the woods) and someone's good advice helped me out. I will have to try to remember whose suggestion got me out of trouble.

I looked it up. I got the suggestion from RCW on 11-7-2020

The L4701 has a high pressure common rail fuel supply and a more complicated fuel delivery system. Get a shop manual before you go to far. If there is a problem in your fuel it can damage the high pressure pump and injectors, expensive damage. Is it posting error codes?

The OP stated that "no warning lights are on"
I would think that an error code, small as it is, might normally be considered to be a warning light.

The exhaust smells a lot like it does during, or right before the regen light comes on. Could it be an issue with the DPF? I thought about doing a forced regen, but it’s running super rough at anything over 1200-1500 RPM and I didn’t want to do anymore damage that might already be done.

Are you 100% sure you put diesel in it?
Sounds like Gasoline contamination.
