Yes, almost everyone around me is running minimal heards just to meet the county tax requirement/ag exemption, the drought has been hurting everyone. Small operations that dont produce their own hay are not making money. While back there was some discussion on beef market, etc. on this thread.
Don’t know if it was a current episode, but just heard on RFDTV’s Cattlemen to Cattlemen that beef animal counts are at 60-year lows.
Was aware numbers were low, but didn’t realize that low.
They did say that could be an opportunity for expansion.
I had moved some old hay off the newly acquired property and put that fresh bale out almost 2 weeks ago. And then it started to rain about 3 days later(last week in August 1.3in). Monday evening to Tuesday morning, 1.2in measured yesterday. Hopefully more to come today. She looks like she prefers something green rather than what's in the hay ring.
Those saw blades work great. I have 1 on my Shindiawa Redstick & use it frequently. They work very well on rattlesnakes. Ask me how I know.
You probably have more rattlesnakes than I do. The hogs down here have pretty much wiped them out per the life long locals. I have only encountered one since I bought this place in 2020.Those saw blades work great. I have 1 on my Shindiawa Redstick & use it frequently. They work very well on rattlesnakes. I have encountered 5-6 since 2001. Not a great amount, but enough to keep you vigilant. I was removing some brush with the Redstick when a Prairie rattler struck at the blade. I didn’t know he was there. He was cut in 2 & half of the snake was pitched into my leg. Luckily, it was not the business end. That did get my heart rate up.You probably have more rattlesnakes than I do. The hogs down here have pretty much wiped them out per the life long locals. I planted my wildlife plots 2 weeks ago. We have not had any measurable rain since then. The moisture from some of the vegetation I disked in was enough to get some germination. I would really like a good soaker. The last couple rain events in the area were not forecasted, & missed completely. As you know, this is the component of farming we have no control over.80% rain chance today from the hurricane, less than 10% for the remainder of the week. So hopefully today we will get a good soakin.
