We got a small trace of rain yesterday around 6pm, that's a good sign.

Starting on Wednesday and through Easter wknd, forecast is showing 2in.

We need rain really bad, I just pray it doesn't wash these tiny seeds out of 1/4" of soil cover.

Not working today, but I'm gonna try real hard in getting some more seed in the ground tomorrow where I'm clearing around the Live oaks.

I don't use the shoulder strap because I have ran into wasps before, I want to distance myself fast as I can!!

I've looked into getting a walk behind one, but those boogers are pricey.
"A walk behind one" ?
Like my Gravely - 12 HP Kohler, 12V electric start, 30" front mounted heavy brush deck, with 8lb. brush blade ?
With doolies and "steering brake"!
A fantastic machine.
I don't know if they even make a Gravely like that anymore (bought 1989).
I think I have only 35 hours on it.

DR makes a conversion kit with a blade, but it's pricey. Their blade$ are proprietary too I think.

If you can find a used (very late 80's- early 90's) Gravely like the one I have, I can tell you that it is light years ahead, in machine quality, durability, and capability, over the current day DR machines.

At 82 I am really too old to want to use it anymore, so suggested to my oldest son (56), that I might sell it ......He said......NO !!!!

Any idea how it got up there? (& great, now I have to start looking in my trees for prickly pear)

I have some prickly pear in my brome field. Do you have a favorite method for killing it?
Do NOT mow it! ever part will root and grow into a new plant.

They are pretty easy to remove really. Take a brush axe or machete and cut the plant back to a manageable size. Pick up every single piece that you cut off, use a bucket to hold what you cut off and pick it up with a grabber. Then dig out the root of the plant which is probably about less than six inches deep.

If you can mark it with a post ans look at the same area you may find other plants that come up in a few months. Repeat until there are no more or for eternity whichever is first.

Raccons like to eat the fruit and my guess is they made a deposit there.

I use remedy, and diesel.

This is a great tool for unwanted trees/brush/plants on your property.

I usually find the prickly pear patches strung out in the travel direction of the swather & baler.

There is some company in Texas that makes some implement that can help eradicate them. I can’t locate any information about them right now but will look for them more if you want me to.

basically the implement crushes the cactus so that it dries out faster than it can root.

The way to grow a new cactus is sort of interesting and explains what you see in your field… cut a pad off and lay it down and the spines hold it in place and it roots. Cut the pad in half and put the cut side down on the ground and they both root.

Those could be collectables. You might have found something good.
I have a couple mineral tubs full of old bottles. Here are some that the Laundry Fairy has kept inside the house. I bet I'll probably hit another trash site when I go to slope those draws to make them a bit safer for me, cattle or someone on an atv/utv.

This is a 120 acre brome field. It was cut last June & then we had a long dry spell. The brome went dormant & the only thing green in the field was the prickly pear. It was pretty easy to spot. I cleaned up all the patches I could find (2 -55 gal barrels full). I witnessed exactly what you said. There were some pads scattered fore & aft of the main patch. Im guessing, relocated by the swather & baler. Just sitting there, “HA”. Most had a root or 2 working into the soil. Roots were treated with Remedy & diesel. I didn’t flag the spots, but have them mentally noted & will return this year (prob forever) to clean up any strays.
