I know this is a regional question but any ideas are appreciated.

Got a quote on a weld wire fence materials and installation.
Wood fence post, weld wire, 6in poplar band at top and a strand of barbed wire running on inside at top. 2 12ft wooden gates. Right at 600ft of fence.
Got a quote of $3100 installed.
Any ideas if this is high, low, fair price?

Clear, flat, rock-free land? Rocks, trees, hills, valleys, brush, corners?

More bids for the job?

What are you thinking to keep in (or out)?

I am not a big fan of welded wire. Falls apart and hard to work with. What is a poplar band?

Type of posts? 4 by 6 treated? Wire gauge of mesh part?

Price out the material yourself as well. How far apart are they planning to space the posts. Figure 5 posts on the corners. One on the corner, one on either side of it, with the last two as braces.

4 foot welded wire is $50 for a 100ft roll at lowes. So 600ft of wire will run you around $300. Plus posts, and gate material, hinge sets ect. If they are using an auger to dig the holes, then figure a day, to a day and a half to set the posts depending on the soil and digging conditions. Another 1/2 day to a day to string the wire. If they are using an auger on a skid steer, then all posts should be in, in one day.

Most smaller fence companies usually get there material at lowes or home depot and add some mark up to it. Found that out when pricing wooden fence panels to help out a neighbor. Ended up buying the material myself and building my own panels

I did my back yard with steel drive posts and welded wire. Then used chain link posts (braced) on each corner, then every 100 ft down the line. Cost me around 600$ to do around 800ft of wire and posts. Had my oldest come over and help. We did it in a weekend.

This is welded wire. It's almost NOT stretchable.

If you are looking for a fence to keep animals in (or out) this would be a better product. It comes in longer rolls, it has smaller openings at the top and the opening size gets progressive larger towards the bottom. Most importantly is will stretch to form a nice tight, good looking barrier. Often referred to as field fence.

Obviously you can buy either product locally.

BCP, that's it basically. I got a little Zebu bull to keep on and maybe some goats eventually.
The price seemed crazy high to me. I got another guy going to price it out and will be much cheaper off another board I'm on( HuntFishQuest.com).
I really don't have time to do it with all the other stuff I need to get down.
Have to prioritize.
Thx for all the tips and advice...

Water buffalo steaks were mighty fine eating the way they were fixed when I took R&R in Bangkok. Definitely different than beef steaks.

D2 do they really put the small squares at the top in Kansas? Around here we put them at the bottom. :) If those squares are too big, there is a type of woven wire sometimes called horse fencing or unclimbable mesh that is heavy gauge woven wire, all the squares 2 by 4 inches that makes good horse sheep and dog fencing. With a top rail it looks much like picture, but will hold up much better. It is stretchable, but less so than field fence. Goats with horns stick their heads through the field fence squares and get stuck. As do lambs sometimes, and horses stick their feet through the squares if there are horses on the other side. A hot wire helps. The univ uses barbed wire on top of their fencing for their herd.

My mind was in a coma trying to describe for someone what a fence looks like! We're backwards but not upside down. :D

You are so correct. Install with the larger opening at the top.
