Disc harrow shackle

I bought an old Ford disc harrow that was in production from 1963 to the early 80's. The shacke is about to wear through and I can't find a replacement.

Can I take it to a welder and have him build up the thin area?

just drop it off and by the time you get back with a large coffee and muffin, he'll have it done !

You would be better off making a new shackle out of a strip of steel.

Will it wear the inside of the loop faster since it's such a small contact point?

It would be the same as a Pintle hitch. It might wear faster if you were doing very large acreage. From your first picture you had 2 contact points at first. How many years did it last?

Also the clevis could allow the ring to move up and down a little, as you cross the field, so the contact point is varied.

I like that idea also. Drill a hole thru the damaged clevis for the pin of the new clevis …or use the original pin thru the new clevis.

really , 5 minutes adding some weld is quick,simple and outlive the new owner.

Agreed.

Drop a small piece of round stock in the bottom for 'filler' weld that in with one pass over the top of it.

Grind the sides smooth. 30 minutes tops....including cooling time.

Having a 'welder' do it will cost more than buying a clevis/shackle to 'replace' it but if wanting to keep the original configuration (by necessity or choice) then it should be a simple fix.

It would take longer to set up for it...than make the repair.

I bought it used. There's no telling how old it is. They were made from 1963 to the early/mid 1980's

After you fix it - a little grease smeared on there will help immensely.
