I try to open my Yahoo mail today and I can't. I get this message,

"us.mg1.mail.yahoo.com uses an invalid security certificate."

What is this, and what causes it, and how do I get around it?

Yahoo came out with a new tool bar, which to me, seems useless. It won't let me use the add ons I use to have, so I un-checked it. It's gone from my view! Do I need it to get mail?

Thanks. len

Sorry about that. FireFox. I didn't update to windows 10, so I wonder if that's part of my punishment!

I need a course in Toolbar maintenance and use. I don't need news, sports, finance, flicker and tumbler on my computer.

I want ebay, paypal, email. I don't even remember how to add them to FF toolbar, it's been so long since I changed anything.

Since the post I went back and clicked the Yahoo Tool bar back on....so I can get my email, but it's still something I don't want and don't think there are any ways to modify it.

Yahoo sold out to Verizion, so got to have more money making loops to jump through, I'm sure.

read this and see if it helps.....
https://support.mozilla.org/en-US/questions/1029450

on the tool bar situation - if YOU want to get rid of it......

go to "start"

control panel

programs and features....

slide down and find the yahoo toolbar

uninstall it....

if that is NOT want you need to do, right click on the "sports" or "finance" and see if there is a delete feature.

Probably not your issue but..... I had the same thing around dinner time one day last week. Turned out the power went off for a minute and the little watch battery for memory must be dead. I looked down at the clock and it said 12:45 and once i clicked on it to set the time it said January 2006. Is the time and date correct on your computer?

Thanks bh115577, but it's not a battery problem. Time and date are fine. I'm sure now it's happened to a kazillion folks and with enough people squawking a work around will appear.

85Hokie, that link was too old to apply to this new problem. New version of Yahoo, I guess. Thanks though.

You gotta watch out when installing "free" software and uncheck those boxes asking to install additional stuff (usually browser toolbars). Those toolbars do little other than take up screen space and slow down your browser. I'd get rid of them all and use bookmarks/favorites.

Have you tried Chrome? Firefox for me has been extremely slow lately.

That's just it, you can't uncheck anything on the new Yahoo toolbar.
but you can delete the toolbar .....and then add icons to your desktop if need be!;):)

D2Cat,

It's a certificate error, either the website or the certificate has been modified in some way. Its up to yahoo to maintain these changes. Your link could be outdated.

Go here for now. https://login.yahoo.com/?.src=ym&.intl=us&.lang=en-US&.done=https%3a//mail.yahoo.com

Your best bet for email is to use an email client. Less chance of something going wrong. Mozilla is a great company, they can be a really good resource for both your web browser and your email client. Try installing the thunderbird email client.

As long as you're running windows 7 you're good to go. Windows 10 very stable as well, I wouldnt be concerned about upgrading to it. I would actually recommend it.

As far as browsers are concerned I use several. Chrome is very stable, but it's also good to use firefox. I use chrome for my gmail, general work stuff and paying bills. I use firefox with adblock and noscript add-ons for searching and going to new unknown sites.

Toolbars are as a general rule undesirable. Definitely uninstall them and if you like just create shortcuts on your bookmarks bar for easy access to frequently used web sites.

Last but not least run a reliable anti-virus software. I highly recommend Malwarebytes. https://www.malwarebytes.com/

or just run a quick scan if you already have something paid for and installed to rule out any nasties

NEPA Guy, thanks for the info. I unchecked the Yahoo toolbar. It gives me more screen space and I really don't miss anything.

I have subscribed to ESET NOD32 Antivirus for a few years. It works good for me, keeping "stuff" off of my computer.

I never updated to Windows 10 because I don't use any social network tools. I have a software program by Quicken, Rental Property Manager that I didn't want to get in a situation where I couldn't get to the info. loaded there. Didn't know if it would work with Windows 10.

Wonder what Windows 10 cost now that the freeby time is up, if I'd ever decide to go there?

I still use a flip phone! I don't use any of the shortcuts Yahoo offered.

I'll check out Thunderbird. Thanks again.

So you're as good with computers as I am with tractors! Let's both keep try to keep it up to speed! :)

Windows upgrade will run you anywhere from $100-200, depending on your needs. I'll assume you will use home version @$100 Its much more than just working with social networking tools. But not wholly necessary.

Good to rule out unwanted programs on your systems. Keep it up.

Follow 85Hokie's advice and do an "official uninstall" of the toolbar, it may speed up your browser. Unchecking it just hides it from view. Not completely necessary, but tidy's things up, and will rule the toolbar out for any future problems you may have.

The old adage "if it ain't broke don't fix it" can apply to your situation and I understand your reluctance to upgrade. If you did that you would most likely have to update quicken, or want to, at the very least. The same applies to your rental property manager software.

With Quicken, the problem lies in updating your database. When it "remaps" the fields to the new database format, (which is common when upgrading to a newer version) sometimes things can get lost or misconstrued. That can be a headache. I always recommend doing it as soon as quicken releases a new version. Quicken may also release new accounting info which may make life easier.

It depends on your version, but If you wait too long, the database may need to be upgraded in steps. Say from version 1.1 to 1.3 to 2.0 to 2.9 etc... There is no way to upgrade your database from say 1.1 to 2.9, It has to be followed in steps and if the database is large and you have a problem, you have to figure out which step caused the problem. A PITA and can get costly all at once.

I would call rental software company as well and find out if it's supported in the newer versions of windows to plan ahead.

Always have a reliable backup for at least your quicken/rental software database. I would recommend an online storage service. There are many you can use for free such as google drive.

Feel free to message me if you ever need more help. I've been in this field before windows even came out.

Hey, thanks for the help. I don't use Quicken except for the Rental Property Mgr. It's actually not a critical software for me now. I just use it to keep expenses. A simple spread sheet would work, but then I have to learn something new!

If I never upgrade (as they call it) to windows 10 will my computer eventually become dis-functional? I am quite satisfied with how my computer operates now, what advantage is there to windows 10? Maybe I should wait for a lightening strike!

It has cooled off from 98 down to 78 today. Makes me want to go out and fire up the log splitter!

I can answer what happens when the software is unsupported :D It pops up a little notice on the bottom right of the screen with a warning saying it's unsupported by Microsoft :D Other then that you can still use it and access the Internet. Had a lap top at work for the JD ecm's. Used the computer like that with Windows Vista for a year, till JD changed there software so it wouldn't run on Vista any more

Sent the computer back to the IT Department. Some genius there installed Windows 8 on a new laptop top. Loaded up the JD software on it, but never checked to see if the program would work. Then sent me the lap top. Played with Windows 8 for an hour trying to get the software to work, till I realized that JD's network was only setup to run on win 7.

So, Had to send the lap top back to the genius with a note in big block letters on and 8x11 sheet of paper saying to install win 7 :D

If the software is unsupported, it does make your computer more susceptible to hackers.

But personally for me, if it ain't broke, then I will run it till it's unsupported. Then do the up grade or buy a new computer :D

I'm sure you'll be fine just leaving it as is.

Depending on what you run. If you have Windows 7 you're good till 2020.

Funny I was splitting wood the other day and the rain cut me short. 8 more cords to go! It's raining and hot out here today, I'm taking the day off hanging inside with the wife and kid. :)

I still use a flip phone too. The only times I ever thought it would be nice to have a smart phone was sitting the deer stand or boat and wanting to see the weather radar. I'm probably the only millennial without a smart phone or social network presence, although I always thought I was generation X until a few years ago. However I was one of the first to upgrade to Windows 10. I hated Windows 8, but 8.1 was a little better. The traditional start menu alone makes it worth the upgrade, but I understand the compatibility concerns.

Is Windows 10 supposed to have advanced social network tools? I wouldn't know. Maybe over Windows 7, but I thought Windows 8 was all about social networking as well.
