NEPA Guy, thanks for the info. I unchecked the Yahoo toolbar. It gives me more screen space and I really don't miss anything.
I have subscribed to ESET NOD32 Antivirus for a few years. It works good for me, keeping "stuff" off of my computer.
I never updated to Windows 10 because I don't use any social network tools. I have a software program by Quicken, Rental Property Manager that I didn't want to get in a situation where I couldn't get to the info. loaded there. Didn't know if it would work with Windows 10.
Wonder what Windows 10 cost now that the freeby time is up, if I'd ever decide to go there?
I still use a flip phone! I don't use any of the shortcuts Yahoo offered.
I'll check out Thunderbird. Thanks again.
So you're as good with computers as I am with tractors! Let's both keep try to keep it up to speed!
Windows upgrade will run you anywhere from $100-200, depending on your needs. I'll assume you will use home version @$100 Its much more than just working with social networking tools. But not wholly necessary.
Good to rule out unwanted programs on your systems. Keep it up.
Follow 85Hokie's advice and do an "official uninstall" of the toolbar, it may speed up your browser. Unchecking it just hides it from view. Not completely necessary, but tidy's things up, and will rule the toolbar out for any future problems you may have.
The old adage "if it ain't broke don't fix it" can apply to your situation and I understand your reluctance to upgrade. If you did that you would most likely have to update quicken, or want to, at the very least. The same applies to your rental property manager software.
With Quicken, the problem lies in updating your database. When it "remaps" the fields to the new database format, (which is common when upgrading to a newer version) sometimes things can get lost or misconstrued. That can be a headache. I always recommend doing it as soon as quicken releases a new version. Quicken may also release new accounting info which may make life easier.
It depends on your version, but If you wait too long, the database may need to be upgraded in steps. Say from version 1.1 to 1.3 to 2.0 to 2.9 etc... There is no way to upgrade your database from say 1.1 to 2.9, It has to be followed in steps and if the database is large and you have a problem, you have to figure out which step caused the problem. A PITA and can get costly all at once.
I would call rental software company as well and find out if it's supported in the newer versions of windows to plan ahead.
Always have a reliable backup for at least your quicken/rental software database. I would recommend an online storage service. There are many you can use for free such as google drive.
Feel free to message me if you ever need more help. I've been in this field before windows even came out.
