Can’t get it to run right

This summer I bought a 1987 B8200 with power steering that’s giving us fits. I have a friend with an auto repair business that’s been working on it for months and it just won’t run right. It starts right up but when you turn the steering wheel it stalls out. Here is what’s been done so far.
  • New compression unloader cable.
  • Glow plugs
  • fuel injectors
  • filters and lines
  • heads machined and new gaskets
  • fuel tank and fuel system cleaned out throughly.
  • they then thought it was a timining issue so they sent out the fuel pump to be timed. The guy ended up having to rebuilt as he said there were some broken parts internally.
  • We also did new radiator hoses and thermostat And flushed cooing system.
This thing has been down for months and today they threw in the towel. He called and said to pick it up they can’t fix it. Of course it’s not his normal business but one of the mechanics said he could fix it as he went to diesel school. I guess he kind of over sold himself.
Any thoughts. I have a ton of dough into this thing and as of right now it’s lawn art. I picked up a trailer and I located and purchased the original matching Kubota back hoe, never thinking I would have this much trouble with the tractor itself.

Manual Transmission or HST?

Your description of moving the steering wheel and the engine stalls makes me think there is a hydraulic connection in the wrong place and when the steering wheel is turned the hydraulic pump dead heads putting a heavy load on the engine causing the stall.

If you do not touch the steering wheel does the loader function properly?

How many hoses connect to the loader valve. 6 or 7?

What happens IF you do not turn the steering............

As I type this - Dave has already asked the same as I was thinking!

Take pictures of the steering control and the Hydraulic hoses especially around the hydraulic block.
Could be as simple as a swapped hydraulic line or Valve for the Hydraulics being closed.
Also try the loader and the three point if it runs without moving the steering wheel.

Where are you located? I have a b8200dp 4x4 and I recently had it at kubota and when I got it back the power steering no longer works... but i can tell you it's a fairly simple system.

On the right-hand side of the tractor in front of the cock-pit there is a forward-hydraulic-accessory block (see picture #1). That has two small lines that come off the back of it and cross over to the left side of the tractor in front of the gear shift on the floor and go toward the actuator (shown in picture #2). This actuator is trigger by turning the steering wheel and it causes the hydraulic ram to move in our out to assist with the steering. There's nothing else to it. If it dies when you try to turn the steering wheel it sounds like the actuator is stuck and it dead-heads the pump (in the transmission behind the right of the seat) and kills the engine. A good heavy equipment repair shop should be able to check the flow and if the actuator is working or not in an hour or two.

In my pictures the first picture has you on the right side of the tractor looking down toward the brake pedal where this hydraulic accessory block is located and the back of the tractor is on your left. Toward the back of the accessor block on top there are two smaller "taps" where they two lines are attached that go over to the left-side (away from you in this view) of the tractor. The second picture is just down inside the front left wheel, very visible. Those two lines reappear there and go into that cylinder-looking-thing which is actually an actuator that is controlled by turning the steering wheel and operates a hydraulic ram.

I hope this helps. If you don't want to go further and are interested in selling the tractor let me know.

If "this" causes "that".....look into the functioning of "this" and see how it would have an effect on "that"...

There is only one bypass valve and it applies to the FEL, Not the steering and there is no way to swap the lines on steering because they are metal lines.
