Just picked up a 2010 BX 2360, 400-hrs, runs like a top once it's started. Starts easily... but shakes hard when starting and when it is shut off. All fluids have been changed. Added some TriboTex and it idles and runs very smoothly. But, shakes violently as it's started for about 1-sec. Odd...????
Any ideas would be highly appreciated!
Thanks,
Cliff

It's a 3 cylinder diesel. It is going to shake a bit.

Might look over the motor mounts and make sure they haven't disintegrated.

To help us evaluate your "shakes hard," could you please tell us about your experience with diesels.
Is this your first or one in a long string of them.
Diesels operate with a much higher cylinder compression than gas engines and this fact alone will make any diesel operate differently than a gas engine when starting and also stopping.
This article, while dealing with gas engines, will enlighten you about primary and secondary balance forces within various engine designs.

Thank you! Will check the mounts. Runs smooth as glass once started, though.
They are high compression engines. It is normal to shake momentarily when started and shut off.

On my BX2200 this is referred to as the death rattle on shutdown. Normal, I would say, for a BX…

On start up I guess mine may initially shake a bit, but much less than on shutdown. So I do not really notice.

My TG1860 (3cyl diesel, slightly smaller than a BX engine) shakes on startup/shutdown like a cr@ck wh0re having withdrawl from some illicit substa@nces.

Has for 17yrs.

My nearly new BX shakes less, but still shimmy's/shakes a little bit.

Hi Dave,
Thank you for your response!
I have an L5030 & a Gator which both start quickly and smoothly. So, I am fairly familiar with diesels. But, this one shakes the whole front of the tractor. It does seem to be compression related... but surprisingly so!
Motor mounts seem solid, but need to take the front end off to see them clearly.
Thanks,
Cliff

I would troll dealer lots looking for the same model and then see how it compares.

Are you using the glow plugs when starting? If you are, are your glow plugs functioning? Starting an indirect injection diesel without th glow plugs usually involves either a non-starting situation or a raggedy start, i.e. lots of shaking, smoking, etc.

I have a BX2360. Had it 9 years since new.

Shook on start up and shut down all 9 years. Inherent to a BX of any vintage.

My BX231 shakes at the moment of starting, for a second of so. Completely normal.

My BX1870 and my neighbors new er BX??? both do the same. Start up and shut down. Doesn't matter if we use the glow plugs when starting.

I think it has to do with the engine in the BX's being rubber mounted.

X5. I went thru several air filter brackets when I had the BX for this very reason. So many, that I simply gave up replacing them and just used a bungee to strap the vibrating air filter housing. ;)

Your observation is completely normal.
