I had installed a mechanical water temp. gauge on the L305. After running tractor mowing brush for an hour or so temp would only get to about 150F.
Ordered a new thermostat.
Removed first bolt from thermostat housing, without incident, but it was really tight. The threads extend down through the housing a couple of threads and I'm sure over the years the oxidation there added greatly to the resistance.
Second bolt "gave up the ghost" quickly.
Ended up with about 3/8" of the bolt still visible. Soaked, tapped, soaked, waited... no gain made.
Welded a nut on stud, thinking the heat would surely give me an advantage. I immediately cooled the hot weld with an ice cube. I twisted off that nut, leaving about "a smiggin" of bolt sticking up.
I welded a second nut on to that little bit of iron, figuring I'd be drilling soon.
My prayers were answered with an easy removal, finally.
Oh, this was during a tornado warning. It hit about 8 miles north.
