I need help, please. My tractor is about 10years old and is maintained regularly. All of sudden, it started lurching forward and stalling after moving a few feet. We've cleaned everything we can think of, changed the filter, checked the fuel and can find nothing wrong. Does anyone have any suggestions?

Tractor stalling

Can anyone give me suggestions for troubleshooting this issue? New battery and starts up fine, but if you touch to pedal (either forward or reverse), it starts to cut out. Take your foot off the pedal and it spits out black smoke. I appreciate any suggestions.

I'm just spit-balling here...But is your Hand Brake Locked down?. If the transmission is in High Range, and the brakes are locked, that's likely what will happen. If you are "Rolling Coal" (black smoke)....something is really pulling horsepower. I'm just suggesting to check the very simple but not always obvious things. Things we tend to overlook, and then say...woops..

How many times did it lurch and stall? Did it start up easily afterwards. What transmission is in your tractor?

After merging your two threads and reading 2 different operating issue write ups, I would say your issue is a bad or mal- adjusted seat switch, it will cut the motor when the pedal is touched if not connected.

And I think we can do without the vanity title, unless you're Diane Keaton, or Diane Lane. :D :p ;)

It is a B7800. I've had no trouble with it at all until the lurching forward started. It does start up easily but as soon as I touch the pedal, it acts like it's going to cut off and spews the black smoke.

Looked under the seat and the switch looks ok, but I'm not sure how to check if it's burned up. Cannot move forward but inches before it cuts off today, but could inch my way along in reverse and it kept running without any black smoke. I appreciate all the suggestions.

Usually there is a plug running to the switch. Unplug it. Try taking 3" of 16g wire, strip 1/4" of insulation from both ends...twist the wire so it won't fray...tin it with a soldering iron if you can...and jam each end of the wire into the two positions on the plug...you've now jumpered through the switch...

I connected the wires on the seat switch with a paper clip and the tractor works fine so you were right. Thank you for the help! I'm back in business and can clean stalls and move hay! Thank you to everyone who offered suggestions.
