Newly acquired tractor and mid mount mower. Just got the tractor running a couple days ago. Everything seem to be working fine, except I have not figured out how to engage the mid PTO to drive the deck. In the LOW position only the back PTO turns. When I try to put it in the HIGH position it wants to grind. I have the speed control in neutral, clutch depressed, engine running, brakes on. Something I am not doing right. Manual for the tractor or mower was no help. Somebody please clue me in.

It should not grind, but .......sometimes it happens. Your clutch might need some adjustment too.
Try with the engine off and see if it will go - and yes clutch in.
If all that does not work - try to "force it in while the engine runs, just to see if it will go - I would not grind but so much!

with the clutch petal depressed, can you move the tractor with the HST pedal?
If you can you have a stuck/rusted/seized clutch disk (very common).
Try this first, plant the front of the tractor against something unmovable and with the clutch petal fully depressed range in low try powering the HST, when/ if it breaks loose you won't move and the motor won't have a load on it.

The tractor has been sitting for 2+ years so the clutch could be stuck. Will try and break it loose with the front up against a big post and see what happens.
That didn't work. Clutch is definitely stuck to the flywheel. Rear wheel just slipped. Tried to bump it good. That didn't work either. Is there an easier way then splitting the tractor to get at the clutch? If it is accessible could it be broke loose by inserting something between the clutch plate and flywheel with the [pedal depressed? Have done that on vehicles and larger tractors and even some GT's. My service manual didn't really show that part of the breakdown.

Nope splitting it is the only way to get to it!
Turn off the tractor engage the mid PTO, start it up and go out and mow everything you can, work it hard, all while pushing the clutch pedal down (use a strap to hold it down), you might get lucky and have it break the clutch loose.

Nope splitting it is the only way to get to it!
Somehow I knew you were going to say that. Going to try and separate it just enough to get a slender long screwdriver in and wedge it between the flywheel and clutch disc. That has to be where it is stuck.
In the process of dropping the deck off now. Hasn't been of in 30+ years I bet. PTO join don't want to move on the splines of the sliding shaft splines. Soaking in penetrate now. Need to get it off to get at the under side of the deck and get it cleaned up, blades sharpened and the PTO splines lubed with anti-sieze.

I plan on doing that, but want to get the deck of so I have some ground clearance. Traction is going to be an issue too. Will use the FWA to help with that some. Have a tree on the neighbors fence I want for firewood. If I can enough traction to get it out of the hay ground to the road plan on dragging it the 2/3 mile home. Those old suburbanite tread design don't have much traction.
Didn't get anything done with the tractor today. It got to warm and real muddy and sloppy. I did get the PTO drove off the tractor though. rotated the drive shaft enough to get at the front of the back U-joint with a hammer while I held the sliding sleeve back. It was the tightest on the shaft splines. Sprayed everything good with a penetrating spray and will let it soak a while. With the tractor in the shop I made a draw bar for it out of some 1" X 3" flat iron. Added a 1/4" spacer on each side so eliminate the side wobble and it is ready to go. Going to look for a pair of chains for it as it will sure need them.
