I recently got a b7100. Do these have what is called a live pto? If I run a rotary cutter will I need an external slip clutch?

You may be confusing over-running clutch and slip clutch. Running a cutter on your hst tractor doesn't require an over-running clutch. It will have an independent PTO. Any cutter should have a shear pin or a slip clutch.

Yes. An over run clutch is what i was thinking about. I was looking at a king cutter 48in and their website said it didn't have a clutch.

Yes the B7100 has an overrun clutch.
It is required on HST's because the drive for the PTO is the drive of the HST.

Pull the shear pin out and replace it with one softer, and get a handful of them.
Much cheaper to replace a shear pin (by a couple thousand times) than it is the gears that run that PTO.

I was concerned about my friends assertation that a bush hog will "push" the tractor without an over riding clutch.

I can't see that happening BUT when it hits something hard and stops THAT 'shock' goes back into the tractor's 'mechanicals'. As to what damage can be done depends on if there's any protection like shear pins, one way clutches or ?? Not al tractors are created equal.

I know my tiller can 'push' my tractor as it's a forward spinning tiller if the soil is just right...

With a gear tractor, that's a concern, BTDT. With your hst, it's not. The B7100hst has one anyway.

North Idaho Wolfman is right about the shear pin on saving damage to tractor. My Woods Dixie cutter has a "Slip Clutch" in place of a shear pin. It's also on a bigger tractor. Word to the wise make sure No one is behind the deck!

On some tractors, the PTO is driven through the transmission input shaft. If the clutch is disengaged, the rotating mass of a bush cutter delivers its energy back through the transmission to the wheels. An over-running clutch prevents this. Apparently, Kubota provides this but our old AC model C didn't and my BIL's Ford 1520 doesn't. External ones that fit on the drive shaft are available.

B6000, and some of the other greys did not have an overrunning clutch.
For whatever reason they just didn't put them on those.
On most of the others the overrun clutch is also the mechanical engagement clutch.
Newer tractor with a hydraulic clutch use a one way bearing to do the same job, the advantage is no clack clack clack when it is working.
