You may be confusing over-running clutch and slip clutch. Running a cutter on your hst tractor doesn't require an over-running clutch. It will have an independent PTO. Any cutter should have a shear pin or a slip clutch.I recently got a b7100. Do these have what is called a live pto? If I run a rotary cutter will I need an external slip clutch?

Bingo.Pull the shear pin out and replace it with one softer, and get a handful of them.
Much cheaper to replace a shear pin (by a couple thousand times) than it is the gears that run that PTO.
On some tractors, the PTO is driven through the transmission input shaft. If the clutch is disengaged, the rotating mass of a bush cutter delivers its energy back through the transmission to the wheels. An over-running clutch prevents this. Apparently, Kubota provides this but our old AC model C didn't and my BIL's Ford 1520 doesn't. External ones that fit on the drive shaft are available.re:

I can't see that happening BUT when it hits something hard and stops THAT 'shock' goes back into the tractor's 'mechanicals'. As to what damage can be done depends on if there's any protection like shear pins, one way clutches or ?? Not al tractors are created equal.
I know my tiller can 'push' my tractor as it's a forward spinning tiller if the soil is just right...
