Hi, new to the site and it looks like a great group in here.

I have done my searching and am a 3rd year HD tech so I have a pretty good grasp on the situation, I think anyway.

First off Ill let you know what I know. He said he was rolling around a very large boulder with the fel when this happened but he also accidentally knocked the 3pt lift lever in to the full up position while doing this. He was on his way back to the shop when he noticed the oil pouring out of the crankcase breather. He drained the engine oil and filled both the engine and the hydraulics, lowered the 3pt lever, but it only ran for a couple minutes before doing the same thing.

I have pulled the hyd pump from the engine and disassembled it. The seal looks fine and the shaft does show some wear but nothing I would consider serious. Is there any other way for hyd oil to enter the crankcase other than this pump?

I am heading in to town to try and find a new seal right now and pick up fluids, hoping this fixes the issue but open to other suggestions.

Thanks
Scott

Scott, are you sure he saw hydraulic fluid in the oil or could it be fuel mixed with engine oil looking like hydraulic fluid? If it is hydraulic fluid, you are probably on the right track. That appears to be the only source of that fluid to the engine. If it is diesel fuel, I would suspect the fuel pump first.

Thanks. The hydraulic oil disappears as fast as the engine oil rises, I did read about the mechanical fuel pump possibility though. The seal and shaft look good in the hyd pump which is concerning. I'll have new seals for the pump tomorrow morning and will see what happens after that.

Doesent take much for a case seal to leak that much oil under pressure. Pump issue may be more than you think, so lok it over closely.

Well just wanted to update, replaced the seal and o-rings in the pump ($5) and all is well. I had a chance to run it around the yard for a couple hours yesterday morning, and the owner ran it for an hour and a half last night.

So even though the old seal looked perfectly fine it was still letting oil past! Just age and a bit of wear I guess.

On another note, after playing around the yard yesterday I'm searching for one for myself. What wicked little machines! This one is a little small for what I would want to do but still got a ton of work done for the time I ran it.

Well this problem seems to be reoccurring every 10-12 hours of run time. I have taken the shims out of the pressure relief mounted on the bottom of the hydraulic pump to no avail.

Thinking of just putting on a new pump but I would hate to do that and have the problem remain. What weight and type of hydraulic/transmission oil should be used in this machine?

The tractor only has 560 hours on it and is verified. The three point hitch is never used and the owner has mostly been using the back hoe attachment which has its own closed hydraulic system.

HELP!!

Is the system being dead headed?

If they have altered anything, or if they keep the three point control in the up position and it get stuck there that could cause issues.

It's also possible that there is a crack or some other failure in the pump causing it to fail, send the pump to be rebuilt or checked.

Hydraulic fluid for this should be any type that is UDT compatible.
There are a lot of different fluids out there.
I use Mystik JT-5, avoid universal types unless they specifically say they are UDT compatible.

I dont believe the system is being dead headed, I disassembled and inspected the pressure relief valve and removed three shims to lower the pressure if it were the case.

The front end loader was supposedly fitted when new, this guy has had it for 12 years and never changed anything regarding the layout of the hyd system.

I read about the 3pt issues when searching so when I last worked on it I adjusted the stops on the 3pt hitch lever so it cannot be lifted.

I am going to pull the hyd pump and inspect it again later today. I will also check what oil he has been using.

Thanks.
