My B2782 calls for a grade 8 for the fan shear bolt-no groove.
Dealer supplied me with a bag of each shear bolt-1/4 " for the fan,and 5/16" for the augers.
They sold both Kubota and New Holland, and I received New Holland bolts.
RAD makes blowers for both.
the i/4" NH bolts were grade 5 and held up very well through the years.
A few years ago,I went to buy a few more, and was offered either Grade 5 or Grade 8 by the dealer.
I chose to stick with Grade 5 since I was happy with the performance.
I certainly would think you could get your choice of grade 5 or 8 at the store and be fine-for the fan bolt.
Good Luck!

In 17 years with my Kubota blower, I only broke that bolt once, and that was when the blower found a rock in the driveway. Even though it broke, it didn't save the fan, and I had to remove it and hammer it back into shape. Back then, you couldn't get parts as quickly as today. I did order one and it is still sitting on the shelf because I never got around to replacing it.

Other than the one on the right being shorter, because the description from online sources and the dealer were all wrong, any difference?

All three are grade 8, 6 lines on the bolt head(hard to see it on the right one but it is).
One is a dealer bolt.
One is a local fastener supplier bolt.
One is a Home Depot bolt.

Local dealer is out with no ETA on fan shear bolts so I am looking for other sources.

Since the dealer bolt appears to have NO groove or alteration, I would say these are equal substitutes, get a longer right bolt.

Had the guy at the parts counter at my local Kubota dealer tell me I could use just a regular grade 5 stainless bolt for my shear bolt, is anybody doing this or tried it?

Cheers
What does the snow blower manual say?
My ARPS blower manual specifies 5/16 x 1-1/2 grade 2 bolts

You don't want to use grade 8 bolts for a shear bolt, grade 2 is best, but grade 5 will usually not damage anything when it shears. The idea of the shear bolt is for it to be the weakest link in the drive train of the blower. With a grade 8 bolt, you have a good chance of breaking something else first.

Grade 8, 1/4-20x 1 1/4"

Apparently this blower can take either depending on the serial number. Mine is the 1/4".

In the photo of the 3 bolts, the one in the middle is from the dealer!!

I would go to www.mcmaster.com and check the cost of that bolt in quantity. A fully threaded 1 1/2" cadmium plated grade 8 bolt is $8.69 for 25 pieces.

The place I bought them is like mcmaster-carr.

I only bought 10 each nut and bolt in case they don't work.
$.22 for the bolt
$.11 for the nut

Might be cheaper in a bulk amount.

Home Depot had the nuts in a 100 count for $8.20 and bolts are $.32 each.

McMaster-Carr is $15.88 for 100 count.

I was under the impression that all 'shear' bolts had a groove in them, usually 1/2 way down the shank. Gotta wonder HOW you tell a non grooved shear bolt from a regular bolt ?

Have used grade5 bolts for decades as shear bolts in snowblowers and my 5' rototiller. Have broken several bolts (rocks and skids...) never any damage to the implements.

TbayOrange, not sure where you can find Grade 5 stainless. The most common, hardest stainless is 304 grade, which is about half the shear strength of a standatd Grade 5 bolt. I generally treat all stainless bolts as Grade 2 equivalent. Also, stainless will deform more before it breaks, compared to regular steel bolts. Deforming means it may "flow" into openings and leave some metal residue.
For that reason, I would never recommend stainless as a shear bolt, stick with regular steel bolts.

If it is anything like the b2750 snowblower, it takes grade 5 on the augers and grade 8 on the fan. Both these bolts have been degraded by grooving at the shear locations.
Not the same as B2750, but:
Shear bolts on the bx2750 vary by model. The 2750C and original 2750D used the grooved grade 8 bolt for the fan shear bolt, through the drive shaft. The newer 2750D (serial #21219365 and up) now used a standard grade 5 x 1/4" bolt for the fan, by using a flange on both the fan and driveshaft, instead of passing the bolt thru the driveshaft like the "C" and early "D" model did. I had the "C model, and the driveshaft eventually got out of alignment (hard to change the bolt). I bought a new "D" model and kept the "C" for spare parts, as everything else except the fan/drive shaft on the blowers are identical
Auger shear bolts remain the same on both models, a grooved grade 5 bolt

My manual says to use grade 5 with the grove cut into them for the auger and grade 5 with no grove for the fan.
I have decided that I will continue to use the bolt with the grove for the auger purchased at my dealer. In my mind the extra cost will be more than offset if the auger is compromised by a bolt not shearing off at the torque it was supposed to, or multiple bolts over time.
Cheers
