I hear mention of the decompression lever on B-7100. Is this lever activated by pulling throttle lever towards rear to kill the engine? SHould it be used when starting to spin engine to build oil pressure prior to starting? We have an old Cat highlift that starts that way. When should it be used? Thanks

You activate the decompression by pulling the control knob out (towards the operator). This keeps the valves from seating and the engine will turn over easier and much faster. You can use this to warm the cylinders quicker for cold starting. You can also use this if you ever have a run-a-way engine, that is injection pump problem or engine getting fuel you can not control.

Assume the knob is on the dash. Do all B 7100's have this? I don't recall seeing one on mine, but I will have to go back and look again.

Depending on age it may not be fitted, I've 2 B7100's and the older one is fitted with the knob whereas the newer one doesn't have it.

MMudd,
I don't think your model will have it, the 6 lug front wheels and HST tells me you have a newer model, and like Sylvester said newer models didn't have it.

Newer B7100 engines were still D750's with indirect injection and so were the D650, D850, and D950, along with other older engines , but other newer model engines use direct injection, which gives you better control of the timing and amount of fuel delivered.
I think the reason they did away with compression release was that battery technology got better as did the starters, which allowed the engines to spin faster.
There might have also been a change in the cetane level of the diesel standards which would make it ignite easier.
