A friend in Hawaii is shipping me an M-1078, the one shown below. I don't know much about them but I did learn that they weigh around 16k empty, they have a Caterpillar straight six diesel engine, a 7-speed Allison transmission, a 50 gallon fuel tank, 4WD, a 5k payload capacity, and a 12k towing capacity.

This could be useful and fun!

I was thinking, since the side rails fold down and the payload is 5k, I could load up implements on the flat bed and pull a tractor behind on a trailer.

May be a useful site for you - military 'stuff'
Thanks. I saw that site this morning and was trying to download a user manual but need to be a member. I was able to find the 800 page manual on a different site!!

Nice! Can you get it road legal here?
I spoke with the local DMV office here and there's a process to get it titled and registered for road use. It involves an inspection by law enforcement. It has a governed top speed of 58mph but there's a source for gears that make it better on the highway.

I thought my F250 held a lot of oil at 15 quarts, but this thing holds 25 quarts based on what I've read!

Almost looks like a Unimog! Wonder if there is a relationship?
From the little reading I've done so far, it's based on the Austrian Steyr 12M18 truck. Here's a photo of the 12M18.

Younger sibling of the ole Deuce and a half.
Automatic tranny since today's youth are not trained on sticks. Poor humor, I know.
Depending on the last time it saw a military maint. bay it should be rock solid.
At 5-6 mpg that 50 gallon tank will not go far or cheap.

Have a blast.
Add a ramp to the cargo area ladder and you could have a great parade truck for DAV.

Looks to be a Stewart & Stevenson build, not Steyr. I see a lot of them up my way. We have a big Army base up here , not too far away.

He is off to a good start.
When my old Voll'y FD sold our last stick engine there were only a few of us that could drive and pump that beast.
Nothing like seeing a lights and siren truck creeping up a hill because the kid missed a gear. Or worse to see a newbie start to reach for the shifter on a down hill.
I really like the new trucks. Push the button and stomp on the pedal !

On topic: I doubt I could afford the tires that the pictured truck is going to require. Maybe the Russians in Ukraine are ready for a used equipment sale.

Yes, that's what is says on the tag.

I'm astounded by the weight of the thing. It's going to be more than a few dollars to get it shipped from Hawaii, but my friend is giving it to me so I think it's worth the time, effort and cost.

Update:

The M-1078 is going to ship out from Hawaii next week and I'll be able to pick it up towards the end of the month. Here's a link to some videos that my friend took this afternoon. He installed three new windshield wipers and two new batteries and it fired right up, first crank.

Oh, and it has a whopping 4,463 miles on the odometer! :D

My friend couldn't stand the old headlights on the LMTV so he replaced them this evening with Vision-X LED lights and LED marker lights. He's a Vision-X dealer and sent me the same lights for my Jeep along with two lightbars a few years back. He even connected the halo ring that turns on with low beams. I still haven't done that on my Jeep lights yet.

For those of you in the know, does that star in the center of the hood indicate that a one star general used this truck?

By the way, its hard to get a sense of the size of this thing, but since the top of the cab is 9ft 4in from the ground I'm guessing that the bottom of the windshield is around 6ft from the ground. I'm 6ft tall so the top of my head would be level with the windshield wipers.

The only ones that I was familiar with the star was on a tag that slipped down between two slotted post and chrome hand nuts secured it. If the general was not in the vehicle, the tag was turned around.

You reminded me of something that I had forgotten about. I need to go through some boxes and find my general tag.

I love the truck. (y)

Another photo of this beast! It looks like quite the climb to get into the cab! As soon as I get it home I'm going to remove the frame that looks like it holds some canvas.
