Almost 100 Hrs, No Regen?

I have used on road diesel in my L4701HST and have yet to go through a regen. Is my tractor broke? On road was bought because I was suspicious about the sulfur count. I’ve since learned that all diesel require ultra low sulfur content.

I don’t know the tractor, but are you sure it hasn’t regened? It should do it pretty seamlessly while operating under most conditions. If you have no warnings on the dash and no obvious running concerns I wouldnt worry much 🤷‍♂️

In the bright sunlight, I can barely tell if the regen light comes on. I know it's regenning because the engine sounds slightly different and the exhaust smells different. Otherwise, the process is seamless.

I expect that it has regened several times but you did not notice.

I do not notice when my M9960 regens and only know that my L6060 regens by checking the display.

Agree with the others. I use on road from a heavily traveled truck stop in mine as well and it regened at about 25 hours, 75 hours, 120 hours, 190 hours. Have 230 something on it now. If you’re running near WOT good chance you wouldn’t notice. The engine does sound a little different during regen but by a little, I mean a little. You might not notice that either. Pretty unlikely it hasn’t regened and you don’t have any lights on the info panel.

Edit: I just went back and looked at the pic you posted. Notice you have a rotary cutter on the back and a dog helping drive.

1) Nice dog.
2) If, for instance, you happen to be running your rotary cutter at 540 PTO RPM when it wants to regen, it already has enough engine RPM to run the regen without you doing anything. So unless you happen to see the light telling you it’s running a regen, quite unlikely you’d know it’s happening.

probably had several passive regen's already. Sound of the engine doesn't really change much on that tractor. I notice it but it's hard to pick up on it while in operation. About the only thing you notice is that the air intake noise changes ever so slightly (gets very slightly quieter as the air intake butterfly valve changes position)

early M7060 with side exit muffler DEFINITELY changes tone, it almost sounds like weak backfiring.

Do you run your tractor mostly at PTO speed? It will regen automatically if the rpms are high enough. Otherwise you will get the flashing light for you to increase rpms.

I run it at varying speeds. Brush hogging is at or above 2k RPM.

Does the 4701 (or 3301/3901) display the inferred soot level in the cluster like Ive read others do?

No. You just have to notice the flashing yellow light if RPMs aren’t sufficient for regen. Kind of have to keep an occasional eye on the display anyway in case of that or any other problems.

The flashing yellow light has always caught my attention even with the sun shining on it. I doubt you would have missed it. How is the tractor performing? Any power issues?

For the techs out there, can an OBD2 scanner be hooked up on our tractors? If so, would this have a history of regens?

The only diagnostic tool that can connect and communicate with a Kubota is the dealer's Diagmaster.

Be thankful! My M6060 has regened 4 times in 40 hours. I keep the rpm's up around 1800 to 2000.
My L6060 is about the same, about 10 hours and the regen indicator comes on because I don't work it very hard. When it shows 90% I plan a job that requires 45 min of 2200 rpm work. Auto regen works best, man regen only worked sometimes.

Indeed. Gotta love the notion of revving an engine and pumping fuel into the exhaust. For lower emissions....

On the other extreme, some of us remember the IH and Ford/NH diesels filling the shed with white smoke at startup. ;) While we don't need to go back to that, there's gotta be better way than what we have now.

Working around the tractor's schedule isn't a long-term solution.

If you are working it hard (ie brush hogging) it might not even need many regens because you are keeping it hot enough the DPF doesnt collect a ton of soot.

Soot builds up in 2 ways, low idle speed, and working it HARD where a lot of fuel is used to maintain RPM. If you are running at high RPM with little load, such as towing a ground driven rake, then you can go a very long time before a regen is needed. If you are tilling or hogging thick weeds and really working the engine where you can hear it burning more fuel, then you will have shorter regen cycles.

Not much different than road trucks on the Interstate. If towing a trailer, then a regen happens more frequently than if just tooling down the highway empty.

Idling soots up the DPF quickly, so avoid idle time as much as possible.

When running at optimum levels, high RPM with a lean mixture, there is less actual soot, and the DPF gets hot enough so soot doesn't accumulate, but as you dump more fuel in for working to keep the RPM up, then the exhaust coming out of the cylinder is heavily sooted and that sticks well because there is also more unburned fuel in there as well.

Also keep in mind that there is no DEF to help catalyze the exhaust, only the DPF to capture soot.
