Will the tractor handle it? I have to set 14" cookies 48" deep.

I think it's wishful thinking unless your digging in jello!:D But if you're persistent and determined you might take a couple hours per hole and a bag of sheer pins and end up with what you need.

What is the general guideline on bit size for horsepower?

Eipo have a look at the pics in my album from my polebarn build, shows the kind of "cookies" they used, on the one hand I think less than 14" on the other hand the tractor and auger they used probably bigger than our tractors, I kind of think I remember it being 40hp, but not sure.

I'd make a "deal" with a local utility contractor and his auger for setting power poles. Chances are he'd get the job done in less than an hour.

I run a 12" auger on my BX all the time. Drilled over 100 hole with it last year and in Indiana clay to boot. I can only get about 34" depth max though , because if I use any longer adapter on the auger, the tractor can't raise it high enough to clear the ground.
