Hello!

I am a new owner of an L3901.

I am about to do my first maintenance (50 hour).

Was wondering what you folks thought about different brands of lubricants ? Do you guys run all Kubota fluids ? Or do you recommend another brand ?

Engine Oil Brand ?
Oil filter Brand ?

Also correct me if I am wrong, but the manual says no trans fluid change unti 400 hours ?

Thanks in advance!

Up to you if you want to change earlier than 400 hours, but change then at least.
Oil and filter brand is personal choice, six of one, half a dozen of the other. But if you use Kubota oil and filters for the warranty period at least, and keep receipts, you may have a better run warranty wise if for some reason something fails.
However as long as you use the correct specification in another brand, by rights you shouldn't have a problem. Use the search function, this question has probably been asked 100+ times, so there are lots of different views out there. YMMV

As mentioned, picking oils and filters is like asking Trump's opinion on any given topic - you might not like the answer! In your neck of the woods, you are not going to run into super cold days to start, however - any "newer" oil is going to be better and better for the engine no matter what the temps are. Typically a lower weight will lubricate "faster" in the cold than a heavier weight oil. Not sure what the requirements are for your engine, but whatever you CHOOSE - make sure it is for a diesel engine. Your local walmart will have at least three different diesel oils to pick from. AS for the filter, I would use a Kubota one for now, many other brands may not hold up over time - typically the hydraulic filter is the one that gives people fits. AS for tranny oil - if HST, and if you switch to S-UDT2 - it should be a little less whiny. If stick - your hydraulics will still thank you too.....;) Then again - that oil need not be changed just yet - the big part is to change the screen that catches all the big stuff, clean that, and change the filter(s) and you should be golden. If not mistaken - your machine's hydraulic quantity of oil is fairly large? SO you might not want to change it just yet.;):)

The search function would produce endless opinions on this question.

I am using or will use the following for my 2012 L4600DT-gear drive

Oil- Rotella T 15-40 and Wix filter
Tranny- Kubota UDT2 and Kubota Filter
Lube-Lucas Red-n-Tacky
Front axle-UDT2
Fuel Filter-Wix
Air Filter- inner and outer Wix

Good luck and regardless of your choice just remember to perform when required.

Bear in mind that IF you had a fuel system issue, and dealer sees anything but a Kubota fuel filter on it, they may deny repair under warranty. Dealer tech advised me of a bulletin a while back.

I ASSume they can do the same with oil and hydraulic filters, but I did not ask.

On the fuel filters, the "other" brands don't filter down to the same micron level, thus letting larger particles through-and if those larger particles are deemed to cause a fuel system failure or problem, absolutely they can give an owner some grief.

Worth keeping in the back of your head when it comes time for servicing.

Something worth mentioning. It's possible that a Kubota branded filter might come from the same factory as X brand filter but that doesn't mean it's the same thing. That just means it leaves the same door on it's way to a dealership. I learned this long ago with tires. Some brands are made by one company but one brand might be inferior to another, even though made by the same people at the same company.

Same for Kubota's oil. I am told it is made by the same people that make Delo. But is it the same as Delo? Who knows. There isn't a significant price difference.

What is fine in a 2012 tractor may not be fine in a newer tractor running with a dpf filter. I think life is easier to get Kubota oil and filters. That way that 5 yr warranty on engine and regen parts will be honored. Or unless something else unfortunate happens to it.

I think if you go looking around it just easier to get the kubota stuff, even if it costs a few bucks more.

You would think a filter is a filter however I had a buddy that lost a car engine to a cheap defective "brand name filter" this filter is pretty much sold everywhere! they sent him 1500 bucks to settle the issue.
