Is it possible that you put the filter on and reversed the inlet and outlet of the filter? I don't know if the filter is a one way filter but some are.

This is the filter that the OP changed. Part # hhk20-36994. Is the o-ring from the original filter stuck on the transmission? The OP seems to know his/her way around the tractor so it seems unlikely but you never know.

Oh I know my way around equipment, and I've had the double gasket bite me in the back side! 🤬😭
It normally will just leak when that happens.:confused:

I have an idea in my head as to what "filter exploding" looks like, but reality might be different than perception. It's often difficult to diagnose problems from afar but it will be interesting to see how this is resolved.

It is building enough pressure at the filter to completely separate it
You forced me to read the WSM for you.

The back pressure on the HST filter is limited by reliefs inside the HST transmission (@ruger1980).

Something is obstructing that path or the HST suddenly went belly up for no reason. Since all you did was change the filter I would be looking real hard at the filter mounting base on the transmission.

He also changed the fluid, so if a piece of aluminum foil from the top of the oil container got into the transmission could it cause a major issue such as this?

Anything put into the sump would have to go through the strainer, the hyd. pump, the priority valve, the steering controller, the filter and then into the HST to the charge relief.

Is the filter separating the canister from the base and leaking at the seam or is it deforming the base and leaking at the gasket? If at the gasket is it possible that the threaded insert has been damaged and the filter gasket is not square with the base as has been mentioned?

If the filter is indeed separating at the seams I would remove the Charge relief as @NIW showed and inspect for blockage. You could even leave the spring and poppet out as a test. Beware that you will likely get oil from the sump when you remove the poppet so you will need a drain pan to catch what drains.

This.

A good description of "filter exploded" would be very useful. One man's "filter exploding" might be another man's "leaks a lot at the base".
