L2201DT oil change: front axle (L245 owners may also be interested)

All, After plenty of excitement with overheating (there's another thread on this), I got the bit between the teeth and started on the 300 hour service which includes changing the transmission and front axle oil. This latter is an operation which defies belief, if you haven't done it before...

    L2201DT overheating

After a very depressing conversation with a bloke in Queensland who thought it might be the head gasket, I decided to go back to first principles and check my work. Just as well I did. Inspection of the radiator and screen a second time showed that I'd been pretty sloppy the first time. While...

Tried this and there's not much water moving if any. Drat! Time and $ coming up I suspect.

    L2201DT overheating

Didn't go all that well. After about half an hour I noticed coolant dripping out of the overflow pipe so the tractor is still running very hot. It never used to do this. Back to plan A which was to flush the cooling system with a commercial product and refill the coolant, along with get a...

    L2201DT overheating

Thanks for that observation South 40, I don't intend to pop out the expansion plugs so perhaps there's about as much coolant in it now as will fit. I checked the screen and radiator this morning and they're clear. So the thermostat is the only item left. I'll try KV equipment in Bendigo, who...

    L2201DT overheating

The story so far: I've flushed out the system with clean water and added coolant. Kubota don't recommend propylene glycol coolant, but ethylene glycol is OK and that's what I used. The good news is that it doesn't boil after more use than I tried yesterday. The bad news is that the capacity of...

    L2201DT overheating

Well here's an interesting thing already. I checked the guide which Vic posted last year and the coolant is stated to be 6.6l of clean water--which is what was in it. However lots of other posts refer to using coolant and I've been down to the hardware outlet and got some Xerex HOAT. It in turn...

    L2201DT overheating

Hi all, Our L2201 has started doing a new thing this slashing season, which is boiling over after less than an hour's use. I have limited tools up here but following other threads I'll be doing this today: --check screen and radiator for external clogging with debris --flush the radiator and...

L2201DT: oil leaking from PTO gearstick

I was thinking a filter was in order for dusty climates like we have here. Good one!

L2201DT: oil leaking from PTO gearstick

Thanks MagKarl, this fixed it. Been operating for around two hours with no problems. Last week I saw the oil coming out after just half an hour. For those who are going to try this maintenance, make sure you get the vent off before trying to clean it. If the guff I got out is any indication...

I didn't know that. I've bookmarked em--this is bound to come in handy! Thanks!

L2201DT: oil leaking from PTO gearstick

Yep, found it right where you said. It was totally clogged up with oily mud. I've attached a picture of the little blighter so that anyone else who is interested in this knows what to look for. So, all cleaned up now. I'l try the tractor out again this afternoon and post back the results...

    L2201: replacement radiator

OK, OK it's been a year and I've been very remiss in not posting about what happened. Better late than never--I hope! It turns out that the cores are reasonably generic even though the assembly is not. The local radiator guy (as these things are measured here, he's more than 50k away) looked up...

It was very, very bad of me not to post back after all the replies. I ended up getting it rebuilt for a fraction of the cost of new at a local (50 kms!) radiator place. I think it cost me about $200 in the end--the best price I got for a replacement was $650, and one mob quoted $850...

L2201DT: oil leaking from PTO gearstick

To elaborate: 2201 is very similar to 245, but I only have an almost unreadable photocopy of the manual. I'm hoping the vent will be in much the same place.

L2201DT: oil leaking from PTO gearstick

All, After months of trouble-free use since I was last here, Sid the tractor has developed an alarming problem. I was just mowing some grass and I noticed that oil is leaking out from the base of the PTO gearstick. Has anyone seen this before, and what do I do about it? It's only just started...
