So, do i need to use the clutch with my B1550 to engage the pto?

Does yours have an electric pto? If so i wouldn't consider it an older tractor. Engaging my pto without the clutch would grind the gears off.

You need the clutch to engage the pto.

After a full season of mowing 4 hrs/wk and winter work, i have to say the twin pedal mod has worked out great. Go to comment 17 on page 2 for my 3 you tube links of the pedal add on.

Thank you all very much. I agree, the rocker style pedal on my tractor leaves a lot to be desired. That's how I backed mine up...I lifted the fwd pedal with my toe.

What I'm saying is run a double pulley down to a front drive shaft. On the drive shaft mount a 12v clutch like you're talking about. This way the only thing that is on the crank is a 2nd pulley and a belt. Your shafts will house all the loads and torsion. The worst you'll do is slip a belt

Wolfman, my measurements from pedal to pivot and linkage to pivot points were very close to original so I had similar travel and resistance. To the touch, both feel the same, if I did want to change that I could move the linkage to a different hole, but it feels very normal, it's also smoother...

I would definitely NOT do that! You will end up with a broken bolt inside your crank at the very least! If this is something you really want to do, then find a double pulley of the correct diameter and a inner diameter smaller than the splines is your current pulley. Then have me or a local...
