That hose being off wouldn't hurt the turbo or engine because it's air before the filter.
The upside down gauge does not matter, it's not a water trap, it's a vacuum gauge and nothing more.

Pull the intake hose off at the turbo look at the input impeller, then spin the impeller by hand, to should spin easy, and fast and free of any noise.
Also the impeller should also have no movement in or out or side to side.

$600 for an ihi turbo from here is more like it
Turbo

I'll have to get the tractor in the garage in the next couple of weeks a take it out to see what's going on.

If it is the turbo, I would assume the $600 replacement would be about what it costs to have it rebuilt?
Do you have any rebuilder of turbos down your way? What's your zip, or what city you near? There is a shop in Iola, Ks. that rebuilds turbos. They are good, reasonable priced and been in business for quite a few years. Also have a shop in St. Joe, Mo.

That extra intake hose is odd. I don't have that on the MX so not sure why the L6060 has it. Clearly rodents aren't getting to the turbo from the inlet or exhaust side. The DPF really attenuates turbo sound, which is very apparent when you run a straight pipe from the turbo back.

I finally went back and listened to the videos and I don't think it is a turbo issue. If it was that bad, it would stay bad. It sounds a whole lot like a plugged exhaust would. How it fixes itself is interesting (if that is what it is). Since you do have a DPF, I'm going to say to look there after a quick inspection of the turbo (pull inlet hose and give the shaft a wiggle). Post a video or pics of the compressor wheel when you do.

That sounds like my Cummins when the exhaust brake is on. I'm wondering if the turbo isn't spinning and causing back pressure like an exhaust brake does. I can't figure out why it would start spinning after it has been run for awhile.

Like Wolfman said, see if you can spin the compressor blades when the engine is cold.

Thanks all for the feedback! Here is an update....

So with the winter storm coming here on Saturday, I decided yesterday to go ahead and pull the tractor into the garage and test the turbo and so on over the weekend.

Well, it's been sitting outside since I originally posted this a couple weeks ago. I go to start her up to move it... engine starts... sounds a little off... I start working toward the front and a few seconds later, BOOOOOM. Crap goes flying out of the exhaust! Scared the hell out of me, I thought the engine blew.

Engine sounds perfectly normal now. I go inspect what few out of the exhaust, a large pack of mouse stuffing in which I kick and a damn mouse comes running out of. It plugged the exhaust so much that it blasted it past the bucket.

I let is sit for a bit after that, started it up... the sound is gone still. Ran it around the property moving a few items and let is heat up. Still stinks terribly, but the sound is still gone. Maybe leftover mouse crap still burning off?

I started her up again this afternoon to test it out. Yep, sound is still gone. I'm guessing he had a small nest in there before and had it all latched to something in the pipe... then after he completed his house over the last few weeks it was big enough and tight enough to build pressure and completely blow everything out of the pipe?

Heres a photo of the nest, no idea where the hell he got this material as there is nothing outside that has this in it.

Good to hear you found out what the problem was. I sure hope the culprit didn't get away with his nest building tactics. Would have been no catch and release here LOL!

It's a shame the smell is gone.

I appreciate a good stench.

So you did have an exhaust brake :D
Technically, yes. Was pondering if I should still check things out... but if I dont need to rip anything apart, I dont want to.

He did, before I realized what the hell was going on he was already at the tree scaling it.

The stink is still there once it warms up. Was getting her prepped today for the winter storm to plow. Sound still gone, stink still there. Maybe it will be gone on the next DPF burn?

Smell will go away over time as it gets hot and burns off any remaining residue.

So I nailed it! 😂

"My F-250 will produce a completely different sound from the exhaust when the exhaust back pressure valve closes in order to get the engine hotter sooner. It makes a higher pitched sound and you can "hear" the restriction. Your exhaust sounds restricted when the tractor is first started."
