    Daily Chuckle

Shop Vac One of the other threads reminded me of this story, I still chuckle about it: Back in the late 60s when I was an apprentice mechanic, I of course got all the ugly and nasty jobs because I was 'the low man'. I was always the guy who had to go into the customers' cars and clean windows...

    Daily Chuckle

Another electric fence story This one has got to be true, back in High School, my friend told me about it. His family had a couple hundred acres, and they'd often lease it out to people who wanted to pasture livestock. His dad, being a frugal type, had set up the fence line to maximize the...

BX25D throttle lever returns to idle

That was me, about 2-1/2 years ago. Here's the thread, also a URL in case the clickthrough doesn't work: http://www.orangetractortalks.com/forums/showpost.php?p=74472&postcount=1

Weight in back of your Truck

Some 35 years ago I had a little Datsun truck that needed weight in the back in a bad way to let it get places in the snow. I also considered everything mentioned here (including the concrete blocks that beat up the front of the bed in a panic stop), then I came up with what I thought was a...

    Camper's question

I respectfully beg to differ. Back in the 60s and 70s when I was a mechanic in a a gas station, we sold White Gas, and the following comments apply to knowledge from those times, straight from our fuels supplier. White Gas is NOT a motor fuel. It was never rated to be. It would have been...

Can I step on the deck to get on/off?

Thanks! Much appreciate you folks helping a new guy out. I'll just ease off it and plant myself slowly next to the tractor. Only thing that drives me nuts is the 'bibbies' catching on the PTO knob and killing the engine...

Can I step on the deck to get on/off?

Question from a guy with a messed-up knee. I have a BX2370 with the 60" MMM. It's a real stretch to get on and off the tractor without stepping on the deck. Doesn't help to have really short legs, either...! So am I going to wreck the mower by stepping on it? Thanks in advance for the advice.

Not your usual oil thread, there is a difference

Don't know if I count or not, having apprenticed in the 'older days', but all the Masters I worked with swore to a man that you didn't need to play chemist with the engine oil. Only time you were ever supposed to use an additive is if you're flushing the engine. Once, I thought I knew better...

    BX1870 for 1 acre?

Congrats on the new machine! Something to consider: while everything is still all shiny and clean... and while you have your camera out, grab snapshots of the model/serial numbers of everything. You'll have a handy and correct record for when you need to order parts. Learned that lesson with...

    OLD Oil Brands Story

I had a '65 Ford F100 "Farmer Pickup" (4-speed Six with compound, long bed, stepside, tan, beat-up bed) that I got for a song, back in the early '70s. Guy told me "Yup, used Pennzoil in 'er, from Day One! Always give me good service!" When I asked why he was selling it, he said it was using a...

How cold & white is it where you at present.

We'd been below freezing (22 - 27°F) for the last week, light breezes of 8-12 knots. Early yesterday morning I was out walking the dog to the end of our little (dirt) country lane to get the paper, and on the way back I heard the wind come up a bit harder and felt this surge of warm air. By...

    Expensive Cheap Parts Lesson

Wow, Wolfman... Deja vu here, also: Let's step into the time machine and go back to 1976, to the time when I was a mechanic in a gas station. We had a '74 Cadillac come in with a bad water pump. The guy insisted, INSISTED, that we put in a rebuilt one as he thought the factory ones were too...

    New BX2370 ROPS Issue

Well, last fall I did that for you. So now you don't have to worry about it ever again. Put a real good crack in the door header in the barn. Gotta say though, I do like the 'Remove Before Flight' sign idea. I'll get something like that together in the spring when I go wake up the tractor.

    Anyone wax their tractor?

Wow, coming up on 7 pages of waxed / non-waxed tractors. My dad always taught me to keep a reasonable amount of care for the painted surfaces, but take exceptional care of the mechanicals. So when mine gets dirty after mowing the meadows, it gets broomed off before it's put away in the barn...
