What kind of plant is this?

I was given this plant and trying to figure out what it actually is

I’ve seen them around but they are usually much larger broad leaves and taller... and they bloom red flowers in the summer or fall ... not sure.

This thing is obviously root bound
But I’m wondering if I can throw it in the ground and it will last a New England winter and come up next year

Any clues?

Looks like a canna lily. If it is, it's not gonna last in the ground in a New England winter.
Yeah...that's my vote as well. Keep it potted and roll it in the garage over winter.
You may be able to keep it for a bit.

Canna lillies and calla lillies are not the same thing. I think these are cannas of some sort, they don't look quite like the callas I've had. You could get a better idea by looking at the bulb. Neither would overwinter outside in the north. I have had them survive maybe once or twice when I don't dig them up, but sooner or later they don't come back in the spring.

spring.

before it multiplied...

I am always learning something here!

Did some reading and it seems the big difference in cana and calla is the cana can grow 8' tall had no idea.

After doing some more research based on what we have to go on I retract my calla and am going with the cana as well.

The leaves do favor cana more than the calla.
