My B2320 starts with the clutch disengaged. I don't start is that way, but what is the purpose of the clutch? It changes speeds without the clutch engaged too.

Does the tractor have a HST? (It must given the question.)

Usually the clutch is used to change the range of the HST (high/low).

That said, my L48 will change from low/medium/high range without the clutch.

The BX2200 doesn't even have a clutch and changes from high/low without it.

Not sure how your tractor works but try pushing the clutch in with a PTO implement on. Bet the PTO is clutched and the implement stops running.

The clutch is used for the PTO primarily- you don't usually have to use it to change the HST ranges, unless something is tight in the drivetrain.

Hello and thanks. Yes to the clutch on the PTO, I was under the impression it had to be disengaged when starting.

You need to use the clutch when starting if you have something connected to the PTO like a snowblower and the PTO is engaged otherwise the starter is having the turn the snowblower as well as the engine.

gwd, you do have to be stopped to change the bx from hi to low. But, you're right, no clutch at all. I do wish it had one for the pto. That sudden engagement of the rotary cutter is kind of hard. I do like that you can engage 4wd while moveing at any speed.

The above posts are 100% correct - the clutch engages the PTO. On some models (like my B7100 HST) there is an interlock with the starter motor so that the clutch has to be depressed to crank the engine.
I guess this is a safety feature to prevent an implement turning unexpectedly when the engine starts - if it has been left with the PTO drive engaged. It also reduces the load on the starter motor which doesn't want to crank a flail mower as well as the engine!
