I have a feeling they are going to tell me they want proof that it was installed by a “Qualified HVAC Professional” …..Then when they find out I did it, they will find a nice polite way to tell me to “Go pound sand in my ass” o_O

But I might still give it a whirl and see what they say.
Of course they will try to fob you off.

But you repaired the system, hence you are qualified to do the job.

And send them a picture of the wiring the "qualified HVAC professional" left behind. To this is clearly proof that he is NOT qualified and that he should be sent back to basic training.

Enjoyed reading you experience. I am sure for many of us it was a "Been there, done that" reminder. (y)

I charged my parts cannon with one shell, a replacement main board similar to what you replaced. I bought a used one off eBay, shortly after installing the new furnace myself (PCB was 25% of new price, delivered). Took out the one that came with the furnace and put the used one in service, about a month after the furnace was installed. That was two or three years ago. So my original new control board is my spare.

Being superstitious I am not going to report that the furnace has been flawless with the used board in it...you know how saying that would go...so I am not gonna...

But now that I think about it, perhaps I did more. I bought an identical furnace, one step smaller, that I use to heat my basement workshop. So in effect I have about 100 percent spares on hand, since the workshop furnace is not really needed unless one likes room temperatures...It has the same control board and most other parts are identical. This is the first season I am using the workshop furnace, which replaced a wall furnace that served me for quite a while.

Do not expect this board to be working when you need it. Electrolytic capacitors loose their insulation layer over time. When high voltage is applied suddenly they can turn into a short circuit. To avoid that voltage has to be increased slowly after long storage periods (years) so that the insulation layer can form again.

To be on the safe side you should power up the spare board once a year.

Gentlemen, I did “consider it”; However, it was/is pretty cold out there (well below freezing) and I had been getting lucky enough to that point, so I decided to “stop poking the bear” and just “pay the man” for a new board.

I still have the old board, but y’all know how “The List” is ever growing, and repairing that board is ranking pretty low right now….. (y)
RWS if you still have your old control board...take a look at my post #57 here.
I was having pretty much the same problem on my gas furnace. A little trouble shooting and a bit of luck led me to take the control board out and have a very close look at the solder joints in the area of the board that seemed suspect. Ten minutes with the solder gun and back in service.

You might be able to find the same on your's with just eyeballing it. Or a magnifying glass to confirm your suspect joints. Find and fix the bad parts. This spring or summer, put back in furnace to test your repairs and if it works (it should)....decide to leave it in place and/or keep it or the new board for a spare.

I'm still waiting for you to publish your book titled: "1001 Outlandish Thread Titles for Every Occasion!" :ROFLMAO:

David

Edit: Post 61 on that repair thread shows the "circled" broken solder joints before the repair.

I would like to get a copy of that book, signed, if possible !

In case you run out of quotation marks, here are a few, simply "copy" and "paste" :)
