just had this engine rebuilt, never ran well after. heavy black smoke poor idle.
took to a shop (different than builder) they found crankcase full of antifreeze.
Brought engine back removed head and noticed o-ring missing on oil pipe on block and also looked like a bad seal between #2 cyl and small coolant hole
What is the reason for the o-ring anyway?

Show us some pictures if you can, O ring would be an important thing if missing. Sound like you need a better head gasket - check your head for warp with feeler gauge and "good" straight edge before replacing head gasket.

The O-ring is the seal in the oil passage from the block to the head. ;)

No the O-ring will just let oil out. :(

What are the gray runs?

Your going to have to check the head and block real carefully for cracks and for flatness.

Are the two small holes between cyl. oil or water passage?

Looks also like one valve was getting hit with antifreeze at sometime as well

The 2 small holes are for water passage.

Could be as simple as the head not being torqued down properly! ;)
