Im sure the druggies on my camera are not looking to hurt anyone. Just steal to sell for drugs.
I always think back to a firearm course I took in the 80's taught by two retired police officers.
If someone steals your TV we were told and its a 20" , you tell the insurance company it was a 30"(big tv's back then by the way) and let them steal it. You never take someone's life over something as meaningless as a tv or car tire or fuel out of your car.
A class I didn't want to take but have carried the lessons from that class forever.

Police officers should give people better information and advice than those two did. It isn't a matter of monetary or sentimental worth in deciding whether to kill someone for stealing. Shooter will be charged with secound degree murder at best and that's what they should have made clear. It really puts homeowners in a bad spot when confronted by druggies as you called the pair on camera. Hurting someone wasn't why they were there but if confronted it's very likely they would hit, stab or shoot homeowner without hesitation. It's that split second when a defense attorney might convince the jury that shooting intruder was justifiable homicide.

One of my co-workers on the graveyard shift way back when had one of if not best solutions to petty theft. A couple of people lost spare tires from pick-ups. This guy moved his from underneath and placed it in bed,,,,,,,,,,with a steel trap beneath center hole in wheel. Someone came back from smoke break saying a man was doing a rain dance with a tire in parking lot. Thief was beat unmercifully including several shots to ribs with a club, trap removed and police called. When cop asked why thief was bloody , guy said "he was trying to hit us with that wheel and refused to stop" to which thief said "I couldn't put the *#@^ thing down, my fingers were stuck in it". Cop looked at his pardner and said " make sure that confession is in our report" . Charges of attempted theft and disorderly conduct was the least of his problem compared to his ribs. In case you never suffered broken and bruised ribs, they hurt,,,,,,, bad,,,,,for a long time. Bad enough and long enough I'd wager that fool never looked at another tire with intent to steal.

Putting a piece of tape over the IR flash lights will result in mostly dark if not totally black night photos.
that's how mine work as well.
Over last couple of years I have added a small army of outdoor cameras in the 4k (12mp range) that give great nigh time resolution. All ordered through Costco.
The IR light is on dusk to dawn and very very hard to see unless lined up pretty much dead on to the cameras. Although the bugs in the summer sure can see the IR light and swarm the cameras.
I had 1 camera replaced on warranty as the IR light was kaput right out of the box so no night time pic's could be seen (daytime it was fine though)
So I think if you cover the IR with a piece of tape your nighttime use will end up being useless.

Maybe about half the cameras I want the baddies to see so I actually mounted a very very bright 5,000 lumen white LED motion light next to the cameras so the motion light also comes on giving great illumination for the cameras. The other half cameras I want to be stealth so no "look at me your on film" warning for the badies. Motion lights also from Costco.

Here in Wisconsin, we have the castle doctrine.
If someone breaks into our home, we have the right to
defend ourselves period.
Breaking into someone's home is considered a threat
and no need to retreat.

There must be someone here from Texas.
Id think that would be one state where they would have laws protecting the homeowner and not the theif.

You are correct in thinking Texas has the castle doctrine. Problem is 21st century ushered in the practice of scrutinizing every case to see if there's violation of civil rights. 90% of those shot are espoused to have been shot because they belonged to a federally protected group of one type or other. Not only does that add burden to shooter justifying shooting, local authorities must test that theory or risk federal repercussions.
Quite often local news shows body cam of someone screaming, cussing, weilding a weapon while advancing on cops when shot. Within hours feds declare footage is evidence and can't be viewed by public. From there the race is on to prosecute cops and lay taxpayers open to civil case by the injured or kinfolks of dead. You and ring footage will be treated similar. Point being you need to own some of those oil wells to pay defense lawyers.
