Im sure the druggies on my camera are not looking to hurt anyone. Just steal to sell for drugs.
I always think back to a firearm course I took in the 80's taught by two retired police officers.
If someone steals your TV we were told and its a 20" , you tell the insurance company it was a 30"(big tv's back then by the way) and let them steal it. You never take someone's life over something as meaningless as a tv or car tire or fuel out of your car.
A class I didn't want to take but have carried the lessons from that class forever.
Police officers should give people better information and advice than those two did. It isn't a matter of monetary or sentimental worth in deciding whether to kill someone for stealing. Shooter will be charged with secound degree murder at best and that's what they should have made clear. It really puts homeowners in a bad spot when confronted by druggies as you called the pair on camera. Hurting someone wasn't why they were there but if confronted it's very likely they would hit, stab or shoot homeowner without hesitation. It's that split second when a defense attorney might convince the jury that shooting intruder was justifiable homicide.
One of my co-workers on the graveyard shift way back when had one of if not best solutions to petty theft. A couple of people lost spare tires from pick-ups. This guy moved his from underneath and placed it in bed,,,,,,,,,,with a steel trap beneath center hole in wheel. Someone came back from smoke break saying a man was doing a rain dance with a tire in parking lot. Thief was beat unmercifully including several shots to ribs with a club, trap removed and police called. When cop asked why thief was bloody , guy said "he was trying to hit us with that wheel and refused to stop" to which thief said "I couldn't put the *#@^ thing down, my fingers were stuck in it". Cop looked at his pardner and said " make sure that confession is in our report" . Charges of attempted theft and disorderly conduct was the least of his problem compared to his ribs. In case you never suffered broken and bruised ribs, they hurt,,,,,,, bad,,,,,for a long time. Bad enough and long enough I'd wager that fool never looked at another tire with intent to steal.
