I have a L4400. Recently had a problem with the starter smoking and getting very hot. When I turned the key to off, the tractor continued to run. I assume the starter is done. Would you recommend rebuilding starter, buying an after market starter or buy a new starter from a Kubota dealer. Also, could you recommend a good aftermarket dealer.

Thanks,
Jeff

It sounds that there is more than just a starter problem. If it were me, I would completely check out the electrical system prior to installing a new starter.

You said that the starter was smoking and getting very hot. This destroys the electrical insulation. If you have a good rebuilder, then they may have to completely rewind it. Probably worth opening and looking for overheating signs.

A new factory starter is about $673 from Coleman Equipment.

Aftermarket from Jack's Small Engines is a SND0691 for $125.

AgKits shows a HTT1150-16800 for $230.

I've had good luck with Colemans and Jacks. Have not ordered from AgKits.

I heard a ticking noise and noticed smoke coming from the starter. I turned the key to the off position and the tractor was under power. It took several seconds before the tractor shutdown, but the starter was still spinning. Took a minute or so before I was able to disconnect starter from battery. Thanks for the information.

Sounds like some wires are shorted out somewhere in the harness.

Agree with Daren, could be a fused starter relay if so equipped.
Test the solenoid wire before installing a new one. ;)

Fused starter relay or solenoid can be the result of a bad battery, low voltage can arc/weld contacts together.

If it released the magic smoke, your money will be better spent on a new one.
