OK I have a question about cell phones... I keep getting calls from telemarketers, people wanting me to vote for so and so,,, the question is this,,, Every one of them comes up and shows baby sisters name as the caller,,, now this is a PIA but if baby sister calls my cell phone,, there is something very wrong,, why do they keep coming up with her name???

They are most likely using voice over IP, and just chose a random local number to show up. Just happens to be the baby sisters. Baby sister should report them to donotcall.gov and the fact that they are using her phone number. Try to get as much info the next time about who they are with, affiliation, name of group, ect.... so she can hand them there butt ;)

Chances are, the baby sister is probably gonna start getting nasty grams from the donotcall.gov site due to other locals reporting her number. So she may need to change her cell number to get herself out of the loop.

Its odd it comes up with a number off your call list. Perhaps a glitch with the phone?
I have a few numbers that i put in my blocked caller's list. Up here we have a do not call registry, which i use. Keeps most junk calls out.

actually her phone has been hacked.
have her save or backup all of her photos. music and contacts. if you back up to a computer. run a virus scan and spyware scan on the files.
you may be able to clean it with a spyware cleaning app i would also get a anti-virus app and run it. if the phone continues to cause problems
get a new number from your provider. wipe the phone, restart her phone after putting in the new chip. or if they didn't provide you with one. be sure the phone is set up with the new number. get a spyware, antivirus app and install and run it. then she can restore her contacts, music and photos. i would run the scanning software again after restoring the photos ect.
make sure she understands that any file transferred or opened on her phone may be contaminated. she should also let her contacts know that she's been hacked and they may need to restore their phones.

before getting your new number wipe the phone and reload it. if that doesn't work, then get the new number. sorry for skipping a step..

Tempforce, this makes sense.
is there certain types of phones more prone to being hacked over others?
My understanding iphones that have been jailbroken are easier to hack than un-molested ipones.
My phone isnt jailbroken, i keep up with the (frequent) updates and hope something lik this never happens. Guess if the desktop (itunes) gets hacked then i have a problem.
It hiding behind a couple firewalled routers, but if its connected its open to attack from anywhere.

Am i on the right track?

I agree and would check both phones in question to rule out the possibility of being compromised.

Sounds to me like the number is being spoofed. Donotcall.gov can't help in this situation.

You may have been targeted. Make any new enemies lately? Unless it's a landline it's difficult to trace the origin. Cell phones need to be subpoenaed to trace the line by your provider. PITA

There's not much you do. Change your number. :(

Hacking phones - that's part of the reason I don't want a smartphone.

On a side note, a couple of weeks ago someone called me back-to-back with a local number. I don't answer unknown numbers unless I'm expecting a call from a local business. Immediately after I get a text from an unknown area code and the guy said he was trying to talk to me about my computers. So it appears he spoofed a number to call me but wasn't smart enough to spoof the number with the text.

Had one of those come through on my work phone. Phone numbers registered in the company database, so I have to answer it. I get calls all the time from all over the country.

They were telling me I had a virus and that they were from Windows IT Department  Spent about 20 minutes on the phone screwing with them.

Same number showed up on my smart phone, which shows up the country it came from. Call originated from China. But the rest of the 10 numbers were from the call earlier.

I use my smart phone for tractor porn :D Google what's around me for entertainment, restaurants, ect....., and occasionally to double check an address if my GPS in the truck gets goofy and wants to send me on walk about

If your smart with your smart phone, and stay away from most social websites, and only go to trusted websites you know are legit, then it cuts way down on your chances of being hacked :D

I get along with animals and most cars just fine. I work alone. It dawned on me almost two years ago that i dont play well with others.....

I must be doing somethin right, have all the work i want and bills are paid.

As far as these scammers (criminals) they should have their thumbs removed. Makes it difficult to do many things. Easier to identify them on the street too.

That's true of computers, but so far, it's not quite on the mark for smart phones. The browsers in smart phones are somewhat minimalist and don't have all the extension mechanisms and other toys that are exploited to infect a computer. By far the most common vector for compromising smart phones is via app downloads, particularly Android, but Apple is also vulnerable in spite of the somewhat draconian App Store management attempt. Either the App itself was intended as a delivery mechanism (aka a Trojan), or more commonly a poorly written targeted apps (like the ones every business lately wants you to install) provides something that can be exploited indirectly to gain access to contacts and other data. If you focus on and pay attention to all the privileges most of these Apps claim to need, and really think about it, its a bit scary. Folks tease me because I won't casually install the latest whatzit cool App that's going around, but I'm just not interested in the hassles of dealing with poorly written Apps AND exposing my phone in doing so. Facebook Messenger specifically comes to mind as both poorly written AND requiring too many permissions. Seems like half my family are addicted to it and keep after me to install it so they can send me messages. I would just as soon not, it's just the risk you know... yeah, that's the ticket... :p
