Driving south yesterday I spot this huge military cargo plane. But with the sun right behind it I can’t see too many details other than it is a turboprop. It has the profile of a C 130. Then it banked right to make a landing approach to the Green Bay airport and I was shocked to see it had 6 engines! So I look it up when I get home and the Air Force did build one back in the early sixties but I read that NASA has it now. So now I’m beginning to doubt it had six engines. Maybe from the angle I saw it the pod on the wing could have made me mistake it for an engine. But I could have sworn I saw three engines per wing. Of course I was driving so it was only brief glances at a time. Is the military testing another one?

Possibly a KC130 with the refuel reels mounted outboard of engines 1 and 4?

Yes, the B36 Peacemaker, that is a pair of jet engines in addition to the other six.

KC130 actually has 2 fuel pods per wing, so if that was mistaken for an engine it would have looked like an 8 engine aircraft.

They can also use that pod mount for armament too.

The C130 only has one fuel pod per wing between the engines.
As does the AC130's Gun ships, Ghostrider, Spectre, Spooky, Stinger II.

Just a versatile aircraft. They are also used as ‘Hurricane Hunters’ to fly into the eye of a hurricane and measure barometric pressure. I read that NOAA has two on order to replace what they use now.
