I've been looking out for a topper(bush hog) or a flail mower for the last few weeks. Mowers to suit small tractors like the Kubotas are very rare around here, so they tend to sell quickly and for high prices. I can buy a new or little-used 8ft mower for less than a used 4ft topper to suit my B8200.

I may have a chance of picking up a (new, unused) finishing mower like this:

The price is right, but I'm not sure if it will do what I want. I have about 3/4 acre to cut and keep down - some of it is overgrown and neglected (think grass/weeds 3 or 4 ft high). I think that once the growth is cut down to sensible heights, this mower will probably be OK. Is tackling the overgrown areas asking too much from this machine?

Since I'm not looking for lawn finish, I hadn't previously considered one of these.

If you knock it down once and stay on top of the mowing weekly or bi-weekly then yeah a finishing mower thats rear discharge will be just fine. What you may want to conside is renting a bush hog for an after noon and knock the over grown area down first with that, then come back weekly or so with a finishing mower.

I have a similar designed machine, an Italian SICMA http://www.everythingattachments.com/PhotoGallery.asp?ProductCode=PH-Mower-FIN-60-PTOREAR-M60-S behind my BX2350. Horsepower is adequate for the job. I mow about 3 acres from paddock to front lawn. The height is adjusted by any combination of 6 different spacers which range from 4 to 35mm.

I have only 2 minor niggles (not real problems) with mine. 1. My mower has pneumatic tyres and mowing across a slope, trying to get as close as possible to a fenceline, the mower tends to drift/crab downhill.. 2. The lip on the front tends to scalp anything protruding above ground. The centre of a drive where the wheel tracks are slightly depressed, and in the orchard where the leaves pile up in front.
