I recently came across this Messicks Video (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=BtNWmybTa50) about "Secondary or Safety Air Filters on Kubota Engines. Specific to BX and Standard L-Series", and I am very familiar with them, since my Vermeer Chipper uses the same type of filtering, but with a larger air filter box. The Kubota part number is K7561-82360, and if you go to the Messicks website, it will not have the BX tractors listed in the applications list, however, it does say at the beginning "Safety or Secondary filter. Fits the following models, and can also be used as a safety filter on the BX-Series". Messicks sells this filter for $12.30. If you search you will find these filters for as low as $5.00 each (eBay) with free shipping (manufactured by Raisman), and one seller has 3 for $7.99. eBay search K7561-82360

The local mechanic told me the second filter wasn't necessary. I saw it as cheap insurance and added one to my L2501. The genuine Kubota article is a bit more expensive but still under $20.

Given the reliability of Kubota engines, IF a secondary filter was NEEDED, Kubota would furnish it from the factory.
While having a second filter is 'nice' say in really, really dusty locals..it's an 'option'.

The only time the safety or inner filter is NEEDED is if the outer filter fails. That said, it is better to have an inner filter and not need it than to not have one and found you needed one. They are much cheaper than an engine is also, no matter who you purchase it from.

My understanding is that the secondary filter is used to ensure zero dust particles or debris get into the intake during cleaning or replacement of the primary filter. There are some manufacturers that state DO NOT remove the secondary filter for the life of the engine unless the primary filter fails or, if for some reason, the secondary filter becomes restricted.
