I tore down my BX2200 tractor down some time ago for a leak (appearing to come out of the top of the HST, which was actually an issue with O-rings). I finally am getting around to reinstalling the unit.

I cannot seem to get the motor shaft (lower shaft) splines to line up and engage. At least I think that is the problem. The pump shaft slides in with a little working back and forth of it from the drive from the motor goes to. Everything slides together and I can get it to about 3/8" or so and then it doesn't want to go any closer. I have tried wiggling it, gently muscling it, moving the input shaft (upper shaft/drive form motor in both directions, with the trunion arm forward and towards the rear. No matter what I do it does not seem to want to go any further.

Am I missing something obvious? Is there a trick I am not aware of? Maybe I am just being too gentle?

Any input/help is greatly appreciated.

Rich

Don't force it!
If the PTO and Drive are not going together smoothly there is a problem with either the coupling or the alinement of the shafts.
Check that the couplings are fully engaging on the rear shafts, and make sure the alignment is square.

Not that this will help you at all but:

A buddy and me took off my Alpha I lower drive one afternoon - changed to the small water pump - did everything correct, had it IN GEAR which is must.....

could NOT get the outdrive to slide in the upper unit. We tried like 20 times - each time it hit a spot from closing like 3/8" - we tried everything from turning the input shaft to turning the prop..... nothing worked.

I mentioned calling a guy that did this all the time , he didn't answer. I said f' it, lets leave it here till tomorrow when we have a fresh start.

He said - lets try one more time!

and FOR whatever reason it slide in perfectly that time!

My point is - try again and see if something is just not lining up - or as NIW mentioned, something is not correctly installed.

Turning the input shaft will not turn the hydrostat motor to line up the rear spline on the transaxle. You will have to put the Range into High or Low, lock one of your axle shafts from turning and slowly turn the other axle shaft to line up the rear splines. When they are aligned, it will slide right together.

Jacking/blocking/turning worked! Unfortunately, I was focused on getting it all lined up while doing three things at once. The HST unit is on... but I didn't notice one of the O-rings had slipped off. Moments after celebrating success I saw it laying on the catch pan I had under the tractor. At least I know the process now. Called it a day yesterday and will take it off and repeat today, hopefully with the O-ring in place!
