9" if you can drill straight.....

if post is 6" by 6"....
6^2 + 6^2=36+36=72
square root of 72 is 8.5"

now if the " post is really a 6by6, it'll be 5.5" x 5.5" ,so lots of 'wiggle' room....

this would be for a 'dirt fill' not concrete. it concrete ,you'll need a bigger hole

I did NOT tell him to rent one, offered him an option instead of having a local guy drill the holes. Please reread my post #10 again. Hopefully you read NOTAMs better.
He didn't say he had 10 holes or 1000 holes he needed done or when they were to be done.
I found out years ago it was cheaper to have a guy drill the holes than for me to BUY a PHD for any of the 4 tractors I owned back then. Also ZERO 'learning curve'. YOU buy the PHD and it'll take a few holes to figure it all out...time you might not want to waste, especially if only a few holes.
What most don't figure out ,is that while someone else is doing the drilling ,YOU have 'free' time to place the poles,so the job actually goes faster.
The huge problem with 3PH PHD is NOT having reverse. That omission can be a real PITA. Hydraulic PHD should have reverse, but will cost more money.
If our friend B737 keeps up the nasty, sarcastic ‘tude, he’ll be joining the unforgettable Sidecar Flip in the land of “sure glad his a** is out of here!”

What brand are your rock augers?

My cottage needs some post holes dug and from my initial "test hole" I might need get one, we are a "stones throw" from the local rock quarry.

I love this... guy owns a tractor, asks for input for purchasing PSD, you chime in and tell him to rent one sub it out... WTAF of the day.
You take offense when someone offers an idea that "seems outside the box" of your thoughts? Often times that is where a good solution is. My guess is you are the type of person who enjoys working by yourself! Your WTAF emphasizes your rudeness.

not offended, just stating the obvious.
It's bewildering when members constantly suggest subbing out, or renting equipment for a task that falls well within the scope of our machines.

I (and others) offered what specific knowledge they have doing this task, not "outside the box" 😂 that isnt what OP asked for.

Land Pride has an auger that attaches to the front end loader and uses the 3rd function valve to operate. Model number is SA10 https://www.landpride.com/products/8868/sa10 series hydraulic post hole digger I have one but haven't used it yet but the main benefit of it over a 3ph version is that you can apply downward pressure and it can go reverse because it's controlled via hydraulics; which is helpful if you hit something that binds up the bit.
