How does one lube the the clutch end of the PTO shaft of a RCR 1860? I can't get any of my lube tips on it and I can't even see the zerk. It is hard to believe the housing over the clutch is not removable or am I missing something? Even getting to the clutch to run it in is not easy... looking for suggestions.
Thanks,

There has been several threads recently discussing this topic. To summarize, most of us remove the shield and make sure no one is around our mower when the PTO is engaged.

Once the shield is removed, it makes accessing the zerk much easier. Also, disconnect it from the tractor and it will let you move the PTO to the side allowing easier access to the zerk next to the slip clutch and while you have the end off the tractor, grease it also.

You can grease the zerk without opening or removing the cover
The question is how? I have many different ends for my grease gun and none gets anywhere close. I cannot see into the U-joint/zerk and have my hand in there at the same time. I like the idea of removing the cover over the clutch to make the area accessible -- makes sense.
Any hints on how to remove the cover would be welcome.
Thanks for the idea,

There should be two side covers that pop out (with some effort) that will give you access to the zerks, Your manual should show them. I also remember seeing a youtube video by landpride showing how to do it.

Thanks for the link, I am looking at cutting a slit on one side of the cover. My hope is to be able to get in off and make it so I can put it back on -- without the bolts that secure it to the gearbox. Not sure the bolts are accessible enough to remove them without cutting the whole thing apart...
From the link; it looks like fordtech86 cut a hole in the PTO shaft cover to get to the zerk -- does not look like a factory hole to me.
Thanks,

I've seen the youtube that has the cover off, but not one talking about the access slots. Yes, I have the slots open and find it a major PITA to run the clutch in. I'm going for removing the cover.

that’s how it was when I got it, Im not sure if the dealer may have done it though.
I did remove the cover without destroying it and found a hole in the shaft cover just like yours. How did you find that hole with the safety cover on?
I was able to unbolt the cover from the gear box -- that was not fun. Being loose from the gear box, I took a back saw and cut a slit on the under side. Had to enlarge the cut around the shaft and was able to remove the cover. Next is coming up with a way to put it back on for storage and operation.

just turn the shaft and the cover on the shaft til it lines up. There is plenty of room on mine without removing the shield on the gear box

Not sure if they have changed the shields over the years though
