Hi all, I have a finish mower and have been using the second pto speed for mowing but seems like it screams. But if I use first gear pto it doesn't cut good. Will I mess up pto or mower if I use second pto gear? Thanks

First gear on the pto is the reccomended 540rpm setting for mowing. What size deck are you cutting with? Could be the deck is to big or you're cutting stuff that should be bush hoged.

Have you sharpened your blades? I mean really sharpen them?

Yes, you are running it way too fast........something will give, eventually.

I have sharpened the blades 2-3 weeks ago and used them once since. Had them sharpened at mower shop so they could be balanced too.

Humm.... I've got a B6100 and a 48 inch side discharge. Over all mine cuts great and can tackle some thick stuff. If I had rear discharge I could probably do a little bit better. Mine bogs down a little here and there but not that bad.

I have a 48 also, mows well in first gear, even tall grass.

Rear discharge is a delight, I'll not use a side discharge again.

Are you losing RPMs?

Mine is rear discharge. I pump five pumps of grease in bearings before every use. No I don't lose power, rpms, smoke, lagging tractor runs fine. I check blades for play before use. Idk, to cut in pto speed one I have to crawl for it to cut good but in pto speed two I can run in top gear cuts good and if I go one gear slower it looks like golf course. I have seven ac and its is all fields no trees no hills. Mind boggling to me. Advise is great I think.

Still scratching my head here. I run mine in about 4th gear on the transmission, its a manual and I cut fine all day long with no problems. Not to fast not to slow and its a do-able pace to get things done. Unless your going at it like Dale Jr on the lawn I don't see any reason why your tractor shouldn't cut good in First gear on the pto.

Are you running the engine at the correct RPMs to get the recommended 540 RPM on the PTO?

I run my rear mount finish mower on my B7100 on the second PTO speed all the time. It gives me a better cut also. Running a PTO shaft at above the rated rpm is supposed to be hard on the universal joints. I have not had any problems in the 5 years I have been using it.
