Hi guys I've got a L4240 that don't seem to know when the pto is engaged. The pto both front and rear work great but I get no readout on the dash and have to guess the rpm I'm operating at, also I can get out of the seat without the tractor shutting down. I'm hoping its just a switch somewhere can you point me in the right direction

According to Tractor Data your PTO is at 540 rpm when your engine is at 2550 rpm. https://www.tractordata.com/farm-tractors/001/8/3/1834-kubota-l4240.html
You may need the owner's manual to tell if there should be any indication on the dash. My L2501 has none. I don't know what year they incorporated a seat switch into the system. Try to score an owner's manual or perhaps have a chat with the dealer or his mechanic.

I have the owners manual and it claims that it should show pto on and rpm for either front or rear pto. It also states there is a seat switch

Yes, the L40 series has a seat switch, and the tach is not marked for PTO speed. The PTO speed is calculated from the engine RPM and displayed on the LCD display part of the dash. A PTO switch that signals the dash when the PTO is engaged is mounted on the PTO control lever bracket.

whitetiger is correct!

there is no "speed sensor" for the pto, rather it is a calculation internal to the meter's ecu. The meter is turned on via the switch on the pto lever. Might look at the lever and see if any wirings are ripped off of it or whatever. Probably can test the switch with a DVOM.

Not that it matters but you can run it higher than 540, or lower. When I was doing some cutting, I just grabbed the throttle and pulled it all the way back. Was up around 600 RPM or so with no load, but when it was in the grass, closer to 550 or so. That's fine. You won't have any issue if you're a little over or under 540.

Just to the right of the steering column there is a button labeled "display mode". Pressing that will get you to the display of PTO speed. (It's next to the "Travel Speed" button.)

Thank you I haven't had time to look there yet but I'll check that makes sense to me as the readout and seat switch both are not working. thanks

Thanks I have been running it where it felt comfortable but I got a chipper and wanted to be sure I ran it fast enough.

great, so it's a 'computerized' dash...wonderful.... does the engine tach work ? if so ,then rear PTO speed will be tach reading / 4.722222
