In my area one company will not transfer any propane from a competitor's tank to theirs. When someone is finished with one company they can have another tank set on the same location, with whatever propane is left in the older tank and get credit from that co.

The only way to a avoid rent is to own the tank, no matter what company one is dealing with, at least around here.
Same scenario here. New company may also want to ensure the line into the house is okay, etc. Can make for a real hassle.

Since we only have a 100 pounder, I’ve often thought of just buying one…..easy peasy at TSC, etc.

My concern is that a new company may not fill it for some friggin reason…..

The company we get propane and fuel oil from is very local - headquartered a mile away. They also sell/service HVAC, although we’ve never used them.

My HVAC guy is a one-man show that’s also local. He’s talking retirement

In our rural area, thinking the fuel company may also be my HVAC service company….not many options out here in the sticks…😳

The last time I had a fill up. The driver said your tank is very old.
I'll put in a order to switch it out. So after a couple Months in pull a service truck and new tank. The guy said the tank is 4' to close to your electric service. Well need to move it to the left. I said what ever. My home was built in 1998. So there's been no issues with the tank since then. So they move it over almost infront of my water hose hook up. Like inches from it. Hook it up.
A week later I get a bill for $120. For moving the tank I didn't want moved.
Our 500 gal tank dataplate says it was made in 1950. As long as the tag is readable as to mfr and serial number,… it is never questioned…by two different suppliers. They’ve informed me that if the tag is missing or unreadable they are prohibited from refilling it…but otherwise…no questions asked.
About ten years ago they did “recommend” I allow them to replace the 60-yr old regulator… and I did. They replaced the regulator, tested the complete system, tank and house…and charged me $45 for the part.

When I changed suppliers last year (got angry at the folks who’d been supplying for the last 50 years because they kept trying to charge a “hazardous materials fee and a fuel-surcharge fee”… ..and the new folks were 20-cents/gal less expensive and tested the entire system free of charge.

PS: to check the entire plumbing system is a simple procedure… They pressurize the system and over 15 mins no loss of pressure is confirmed…and that is that. (They did not require me to turn off the valves at any appliances which had open pilot valves…because when the supply was turned off…the pilot safety valves should have closed automatically…so the test also confirms those safety features as well.)

The Welding supply company I use charges a "hazardous material fee" on just about everything. Gas or Welding wire.
I've bought supplies from other companies and no hazardous fee.
The New England rep came by once with the local salesman. I told him the "fee" was a big Rip off. No other company charges it.
He never came back.

Don't rent a tank. There's agricultural auctions here a few times a year and there's always a few 500 gallon tanks for sale. They usually go for $100 to $300. I have two 500gallon tanks because I was the only bidder.
Probably have the same thing around where you are.

Around here the cost of propane tanks as risen considerably in the last two years. A 500 gal. tank will easily bring $500, and quickly. Wait a bit and the same tank will bring $700. A rebuilt 500 gal. is $1500 and up.

I have a 500 gallon tank that I would love to GIVE away!
It is an underground tank, but has been above ground for 35 years.

Currently $3.49 + 8.9% sales tax here. It just went up this week from $3.19. I expect it will go up further this winter. It always goes up just before Independence Day and Labor Day. We haven't seen prices less than $2.20 per gallon in more than 10 years.

Yep, I couldn’t remember our local rates, but thinking similar to yours even though eastern US.

Again, we’re just small potatoes at a 100 pound tank and one or two fills per year.

I wonder how much of the difference is related to companies with no competion/price fixing and how much is local/state taxes. It seems there is not a lot to justify double the cost for essentially the same product.

It seems, from information here, price is based on winter weather. Warmer climate areas charge more. Maybe it's less demand...charge more!

Wifey watches the propane prices and buys well. Twice since we buried our 1,000 gallon tank back around 2012 we bought at 90-some cents per gallon.

I priced offroad diesel a couple weeks ago and it was $3.22 a gallon for 100 gallons and $3.02 a gallon for 150 gallons. I can only store a bit over 100 gallons now, but am thinking of increasing that.

Just paid $1.69 a gallon here, last year $2.19, both were price before early pay discount. We own our tank, and only fill once a year under the “Summer Fill” (best rat period) our supplier offers.
