I bought green suitcase weights for my bx1880. The green has got to go. Should i sand off all the green or just scuff the surface and spray them orange??

No need.

Just clean and shoot.

Yes, they will scratch green.

Spray them with a name brand oven cleaner, and then when the paint comes loose, blast them with a power washer. Set in the sun to dry, then paint with Bill Hirsch Chevrolet Orange engine paint. That paint doesn't chip, or come off. I painted my bare Chevy block with it and it hasn't pealed or chipped. Not inexpensive, but it works well. You can use a brush with the quart can of paint, and when it dries, there are no brush marks.

I used electrolisys(sp) to clean them, rinse, dry, then used epoxy primer, epoxy paint..that was 15-16 years ago, they ain't on a 'trailer queen' but still look like new.

Thanks for all the replies. I'm probably going wait until it's warm enough to paint outside and depending on how much spare time I have will determine how much of the green I take off!

YES , wait until LATE Spring ! The cast iron MUST be totally warm to the core BEFORE you even think about painting it !!

as for time to remove the green, maybe 3-4 hrs, less than overnight for sure ! using electroysis, 1 per 5g pail setup

That can be taken care of with some Bondo and sandpaper. Some of the new body fillers are as strong as steel and bond exceptionally well. ;)

Mine came black and I scuffed them, washed them with naphtha then shot with R2 Rustoleum which is about as close to Kubota 1 as you'll find at a decent price.

PSA - check your local dealer - mine were $58 bucks each out the door while they were upwards of $80 on line + shipping. Sometimes it pays to shop local.

Might you have the bolt kit part number that holds them to the weight bracket?

But you can speed it up by keeping them inside overnight so that you start out with warm cast iron.
