I’m rebuilding the bucket cylinders on my LA450S loader. Got the cylinder off. I need help with how to remove the end of the cylinder - there are two holes in the end - is a special spanner required to remove it, can I use a pipe wrench without hurting the function (I know it’ll make it ugly).

It is a screw, yes. Yes you can do it nice with the right kind of spanner, or do it ugly with a pipe wrench.

some of them had a ring inside the gland. You had to fish around for the end of the ring and then prys it up out of one of the holes, then turn the gland so that the ring was forced out. I hated those.

Most of them just unscrew. Whack around the outside of the cylinder before trying to unscrewing it. Not hard, just a few firm light hits to loosen the threads a little. Kinda like taking a ball joint out of a spindle, after years of being stuck together sometimes they need a little help.

Thanks for the help - got the gland loose with a pipe wrench. When I pulled everything apart, it was apparent why it was leaking - seals had pretty much disintegrated. I'm putting back together and don't know which way the seal that goes in the middle of the gland should be oriented since the one that was in it was so gone - does the flange that sticks up from the body of the seal go toward the exterior end of the gland or toward the piston end.

if you are speaking of the hard plastic seal that is in the center (and is usually the one that completely fails), the flange faces the pressurized oil, IOW towards the piston
