oil and cold weather

i have a mx4800, I have read the manual on what oils I can use here in iowa. it gets pretty f'in cold here sometimes. I was at the dealer and noticed they don't sell 10w30 oil. I asked why and they state they use 15w40 in everything, even in the winter with no issues..... ok??? I would like to run 10w30, since it does get quite brisk. do I not have to? am I ok with 15w40 in winter? I can fine 10w30 at wal mart, but its a synthetic blend but I have not found a syn blend in 15w40 so now I wonder if I should be switching from syn blend to conventional?

the viscosity between 15w and 10w is measurable, but I would not hesitate to use the 15w-40

and hell no, I would not switch BACK from syn to conv......many may argue but synthetic is simple a better protecting oil.....period. Now you could switch back a forth 10 times a year from conv to syn and back and it will not hurt a thing, that too is an old wives tale.

If you are really worried - get a block heater and all your worries will melt away!!;):)

15w40 won't hurt anything but the lighter weight oil should give you a little better fuel economy as well as start easier. I run 5w30 full synthetic in all my diesels year round without any issues.

i understand what the viscosity numbers mean, in the manual it states to use 10w30 when it gets below 5 degrees I think. all I can find around here is 5w40 full syn 10w30 syn blend then conventional 15w40, all rotella brand. of course there are other brands, but they are not as readily available as rotella, and id like to stick with 1 brand. I ask this question because I don't have a block heater, and my tractor stays out in the barn. im fairly new to diesels, running a 15w in winter kinda shocks me.

If you want another option look at Amsoil. They'll have any weight you need in full synthetic and will ship it right to your door. If expense is first, then quality don't waste your time looking. If you want quality you won't be disappointed. I use the 5w30 HDD in all my diesels and it's been great.

I am going to back Bulldog on this one. Depending on the year (emissions really), a great addition to your machine is a full syn.

Don't worry about SAE this or that as a much thinner viscosity of synthetic oil will generally way out way the specs. Amsoil is a great product. They actually provide several companies their base stock.

So not to wave flags of one versus another so does mobil-1 and royal purple etc. and just to finish my thoughts so is super udt2.

i ask about the 5w40 because my tractor is new,2015 mx4800, and in the manual it doesn't state that I can use 5w40. it does get into the negatives around here, and I would hate to void my warranty because "its not stated in the manual" has Kubota came out with a statement about using 5w40?

What you need to look for is the API rating, SJ, CD, CJ-4, ect.

The API rating is your first concern. If the oil doesn't meet that requirement it can't, won't, will never protect your engine as it should. I personally run 5w30 in my diesels and I would say as long as your oil has the correct API rating you'll be fine with 5w40.

I would read up on this, but my 2 cents is this ...

I have been running full synthetic 5W 40 in all my diesels ( 2003 VW, 1995 Ford 6.9, 2001 Isuzu NPR) OK they are not tractors but i would use no other oil.

Also the ford with the 6.9 International diesel could probably run on any oil and I do switch with that one back and forth to full synthetic , blended and standard oils - nothing seems to bother it but it is a tank.

The VW Jetta TDI is very specific on what it needs and have always used 5W 40 full synthetic , with over 200,000 hard, hard miles on her It had to be the right thing to do.

I just bought a great Kubota B7100 and was going to use only the standard Kubota lubricants in that old machine (1979) reason being that I believe (falsely) that the older machines somehow won't agree with the new synthetics, viscosity - age etc - but after an hour or two of reading up on it I am leaning towards the synthetics.

If you are worried about the warranty then talk with the dealer ?

back in the 40-50's - a 30 weight oil, wassss.....purdy much all you had for a typical application, and in those old tractors, the starter had to work it's ars off to pump that thick milkshake!

If THEY had multi weight oils back then or synthetics.......they WOULD have used them!

Run full synthetic 5w-40 in that old girl, ifn you want to - it aint gonna hurt a thing - I would highly recommend something like Amsoil , Rotella or Mobile 1..............

10w-30 is probably the most "common" multi out there - it meets the needs high and low - the 5-40 will just increase the flow in cold and protect a little more when hot!

just make sure that oil is FOR diesels......that's the catch.
